french railway gun
Re: french railway gun
Jos,
If I’m not mistaken
34 cm K.W.(E) 674 (f) = 340 mm Mle 1912 B (= “sur affût à berceau”)
34 cm K.Gl. (E) 673 (f) = 340 mm Mle 1912 G (= “sur affût à glissement)
Do you know the French designation for the 30,5 cm KW(E) 630/1(f)? It would have to be a “305 mm sur affût à berceau” (“Wiegenlafette”).

Re: french railway gun
Sorry Emmanuel
Could not find anything about “305 mm sur affût à berceau” , maybe we ask Guy ?
The Wiegelafette must be the type that was used in the M.K.B. Plouharnel without
the railway wheels .

Re: french railway gun
Sturm78,
1st picture: maybe a 274 mm Mle 1887 ; initially a 274 mm Mle 1893-96 which barrel was replaced with a 274 mm Mle 1887 in 1917.
2nd picture: possibly a 305 mm Mle 1893-96. The 320 mm Mle 1917 was a relined 305 mm gun but I think that it usually bore one drawing of the “seven dwarves” on the front side.

I think I found it. It’s the “305 mm Mle 1893 à berceau”.
This designation appears on a post written by ALVF on a forum about the French Army in 1940. ALVF mentioned that there was 3 existing guns in 1939 but none were mobilized.
And I recently found a picture of it!

Thank you for your answer, Emmanuel.
The French railway artillery of WW1 is a very complicated subject.

Re: french railway gun
Hello! There is a photo of captured French railway gun named 'Mireille'. Is there any chance to know more details about this gun: model and caliber?
Best regards,

Re: french railway gun
Alexander,
It is a 340 mm Mle 1912 B (i.e. "à berceau"). "Mireille" was a very popular gun when we count the large number of pictures of it taken by the Germans in 1940.
This gun is not to be confused with the 340 mm Mle 1912 G (“à glissement”).
A good start to learn about French and German railway guns is to invest in the book "Eisenbahnartillerie" by Guy François.

Re: french railway gun
I just realized that it is identical to the "320 mm Mle 1917 à berceau" since that gun was just a 305 mm realined to 320 mm.Manuferey wrote:It’s the “305 mm Mle 1893 à berceau”.
