Unknow gun
Re: Unknow gun
Please help to ID these Italian mountain guns. Photo was taken in Athens during Italian-German parade when Greece had been conquered.
Thanks in advance!
Best regards,
Alexander

Re: Unknow gun
Reportedly 1938, Dutch shipyard, but could be wrongly identified. Any idea what kind of naval gun?

Re: Unknow gun
I would say due to the small size and long length of the recoil system below the barrel that this is indeed a 3 in 50 but on a mark 20 mount. The Mark 22 had a single shorter fatter recoil cylinder while the Mark 20 had two longer smaller cylinders. This would make it a postwar photo, if Dutch, however the Dutch did have these post war. See attached Photos
Re: Unknow gun
Thanks to both of you, fully agreed that this is a post war picture. The guns probably came with US supplied vessels or were lend lease guns for Dutch merchantmen in 1941-42.
The intriguing thing is that the picture is supposedly from the Wilton-Fijenoord shipyard. Those who know me, know that I published a lot on the weapons produced at this and other Dutch shipyards. Never knew they also repaired or did maintenance or whatever on these US 3inchers postwar!
For a while I believed that WF had supplied 3 inch naval guns to Argentina, due to what was probalby a misprint in Campbell, but now...maybe, just maybe the company was recycling guns from Dutch merchantmen? Where else did the many guns go, by the way?

Re: Unknow gun
I believe that you will find that the guns that were on merchant ships were only loaned to the countries involved and had to be returned to the US Navy after the War. The same thing occurred with the Naval guns 7,6,5,4 and 3 inch naval guns loaned to the US coast artillery after Pearl Harbor. When no longer needed they were repossessed by the Navy. The guns sold to the dutch such as the 7 inch Coast Defense guns in the Dutch east Indies were purchased at scrap prices and were in a different category.
