It depends what you're interested in. Most books about artillery deal with the guns - pics, a bit of history and some data. They vary widely in quality. Others are unit histories - of very mixed quality and the nature of the account varies widely, and beware, I suspect that some members of this list might be offended by, for example, Fraser-Tytler's 'Field Guns in France', originally published in 1922 but available in modern reprint.

More tactical and technical books are not widespread, probably because there aren't many authors able to write them and there isn't huge demand. They include:

On Artillery, Bruce I Gudmundson, 1993. This covers French and German arty in WW1 and WW2.

The Field Artillery - History and Sourcebook, Boyd L Dastrup, 1994. This is wide ranging.

Red God of War - Soviet Artillery and Rocket Forces, Chris Bellamy, 1986. This book is probably the definitive work in English on the subject. The author is now a full professor but was an arty officer and spent time in technical intelligence. It covers Russian arty from way back but the main focus is the Soviet period. Pity he hasn't produced an updated version using sources available post Cold War.

Field Artillery and Firepower, JBA Bailey, 1989, revised edn 2004. The book is often described as 'magisterial'. The author was an artillery offr and ended his service as Director General Development & Doctrine in MoDUK. It is modern but includes a lot of history from main nations. You could also work through his list of references, 34 pages!

The Development of Artillery Tactics and Equipment, AL Pemberton, 1950. This is a UK War Office monograph covering WW2, I believe it is now available in reprint.

Artillery: it's origin, heyday and decline, OFG Hogg, 1970. A fairly wide ranging history. Author knows the subject well

Fire-Power - the British Army weapons and theories of war 1904-1945, Shelford Bidwell & Dominick Graham, 1982, reprint 2004. Covers a lot more than artillery, not for the faint hearted. Authors know the subject.

Hi,

I can't believe that no one has mentioned Erik Ettrup et al.'s great book "Festung Lista".

Really thorough work - highly recommended!

Hello,

not really about Axis fortifications, but still... since a lot of our Belgian friends will know his previous volume 'De Atlantikwall Van Willemstad tot de Somme', Frank Philippart has a new book on the Maginot Line, 'De Maginot Linie Van de Noordzee tot de Rijn', available through Lannoo Publ. from 12-02-2008 (ISBN 978-90-209-7163-7).

Thanks Barovic to mention my new book about the Maginot Line.
This is all about.
QUOTE
De Maginotlinie, van de Noordzee tot de Rijn

The French Maginot Line was probably the most advanced of all fortification lines built in the thirties to defend France against Germany. Nowadays these forts lie forgotten in forests and on desolate hills. To locate them without a decent guide is a hard nut to crack.
This book explains you what the Maginot Line is. You can read about the history from the building to the Blitzkrieg in 1940 and about the hard battles of the US troops in 1944. Next to the history I'm analysing the components of the fort like the armament, the turrets and the copulas. To understand without being there I let you make a virtual tour from the entrance to the combat blocs via the ammunition store, the barracks, the kitchen, the engine room and the command post.
The second part of the book guides you along the French border to discover all the forts and various casemates. This approach has never been done before.
Per sector you have the history about what happened there. Per fort you have a travel route, a description with a schema and the history of that particular fort.
The last chapter gives an impression of the different concept of the Maginot fortresses in the south of France at the Italian border.
The book is largely decorated with maps, schema's, actual photos and photos from 1940 and 1944 in an amazing "then and now" situation.
