Re: Railway guns of the Axis forces
Hello,
A poor but interesting photograph of the 38 cm SKC/34 Siegfried railway gun named "Gneisenau" (Reichsbahn Nr 918594 with the Siegfried gun Nr 81) in 1948 at the "Fonderie Nationale de Ruelle".
The gun was left to Montelimar since 1944, badly damaged at the top of the outer tube by a bomb north of Marseille in August 1944.
In 1948, the railway gun "Gneisenau" was send to Ruelle to dismount the inner tube which was in a good state. This inner tube was foreseen to the refurbishing of the 38 cm SKC/34 Nr 73 (former Battery Todt gun).
In 1949, the job was finished and the 38 cm SKC/34 Nr 73 gun with the inner tube of the Nr 81 was ready for testing fire. Yours sincerely,
Guy François.

Re: Railway guns of the Axis forces
Hello Guy, referring to the primary reports of the battery, the gneisenau gun had the tube number 80 and the scharnhorst gun had the tube number 81.
Gneisenau were self-destruct at August 27th 1944
Scharnhorst were self-destruct at August 28th 1944

Re: Railway guns of the Axis forces
Hello,
In the french archives, they are many papers of the 38 cm SKC/34 guns of Battery Todt and the two 38 cm Siegfried Railway guns left behind at Montelimar and Saulce in 1944.
Three guns of Battery Todt were refurbished at Ruelle "Fonderie Nationale" and send in Norway in 1949. The Norway send in France ex-french navy guns 380 modèle 1935 C/1936 from a german battery in exchange.
The fourth of the Battery Todt Nr 73 was not in good state. So, the 38 cm SKC/34 Nr 81 in Railway mount was used to repair the gun Nr 73. This gun had the breech self-blasted and had a bomb hit on the tube but his inner tube was in good state and was used on the Nr 73 gun.
-first, the ex-german railway guns left in Montelimar aera (2 guns of 38 cm SKC/34, 2 guns of 28 cm K 5, 2 ex-french 274 modèle 1917) were send at the Atelier de Construction de Tarbes in 1945-1946 for examination.
-in 1949, the mount Nr 918594 was send to Fonderie Nationale de Ruelle to repair the 38 cm Nr 73 with the inner tube of the Nr 81 gun.
-In 1950 and 1951, the repaired 38 cm SKC/34 Nr 73 with the inner tube of the Nr 81 gun was tested on firing range.
-a Photograph taken the same day of the photograph of "Gneisenau" gun (above) at Ruelle by a former worker of "Fonderie Nationale de Ruelle", probably in 1948 or 1949: It is the Nr 918594 mount of the 38 cm SKC/34: In my book "Eisenbahnartillerie", I had written that the "Gneisenau" had the 918593 mount with the Nr 80 gun and the "Scharnhorst" had the 918594 Mount with the Nr 81 gun and now I was not certain of this...
Yours sincerely,
Guy François.

Re: Railway guns of the Axis forces
Hi Sturm,
I think it is a 24cm SK L40 Theodor Karl. Note the big "box" above the axis of the gun.
