Hi

According to the drawings there were 2 sockels for these bunkers
the first one looks the same as in the Atlantikwall but the Schrag-
Sockel is new for me ?????

The "Schrägsockel" was used after the first R 30's were build along the Westwall and the range of the guns was not effective against targets far behind the frontline (because of limited elevation in the bunker). As far as I remember some 7 more kilometers were possible with a higher elevation. So the idea came out to place the gun in a slope. On the other hand the 17 cm in the R 30a' s were no longer able to shoot on the first row of the enemy positions behind the front line, because the arch of the trajectory of the projectile didn't allow short distance hits.

PLease find attached a picture of a R 30.

Bye

Daniel

Hello Jos,

thanks for the flowers;-)

A lot of the information come from the fabulous book (two parts, one about the history and one about the technical aspects) by Dieter Bettinger and Martin Bueren "Der Westwall". Even if it was printed years ago it is still availabale, but unfortunately the price is enourmous (it differs from dealer to dealer, but think about 350 € to go).

Hello Jos, hello Andrew,

there were 17 cm batteries along the WW in Ettlingen, Urloffen, Kenzingen, Leiselsheim, Huttingen and Gennenbach. All of this should have been equipped with R 30. I visited only Batterie "Emmi" near Ettlingen some years ago and there are two R 30 remaining as ruins in the wood (I placed pictures of one of those before). Of batterie Urloffen I can only what was written in a report for the Westwalltag 1990:

originally build: 3 x R 30 + 4 x R 11 // 1990: 1 x R 30 damaged by explosion, 1 x R 11 in ruins, the other ones are gone.

Greetings

Daniel

Well, that's true. But nevertheless the remaining R 30s of Batterie Emmi are worth a visit. By the way, according to the same source that I allready mentioned above, the Schrägsockel were build in the batteries at Kinzingen, Leiselsheim and Gennenbach. So some of the pictures must have to be taken in minimum one of theses batteries.

Best regards

Daniel

Hej Daniel

Interesting information. I have tried to locate the battery in Ettlingen without any luck, can you help me with a specific location?

Hello Tonnes,

please find attached a map were I marked the two surviving R 30 with a red circle and some images of both R 30. Interesting detail is that the camouflage painting like trees etc. was quite good visible in 2003.

Best regards

Daniel
