Hello Sturm78 ,
the battery location ??? Good question .
The Germans used 15 cm SKL/45 for at least 3x batteries in Crete :
8./520 MAA - Drapanon
10./520 MAA - Akrotiri Ost
11./520 MAA - Akrotiri West

Here pictures from Panoramio of the battery at Aggelochori, protecting the entrance to the harbour of Thessaloniki (Saloniki).

Thanks.

8O 8O The german document is highly interresting ! It would be great to see if the R611 is build after the drawing (so called early version ? ) or if it looks like most 611 along the atlanticwall.

Yes the 629 is also the old version with a small Vorrat Raum.

From the shape and position of the recoil system under the barrel as well as certain visible features of the carriage this is a US 3 inch gun most likely a Mark 2. It most likely came from the disarmed greek battleship lemnos and in all likelyhood was from the Greek prewar coastal defense program. Von Harnier's "Artillerie Ihn Kustenkampf" lists 2-4 gun 76mm(3 inch) on Crete at cape Drapanon and Spinolonga as well as well as 1-4 gun 76 mm battery at Perdica Island, and 1 76 mm on Fleves island, east of Aegina . He lists none on Aegina island.

No problem, I have done further research and eliminated the 76 mm batteries on Crete as being Italian batteries. An examination of ground photos showing the pecular shape of the islan in the background of your photo has led me to concluding that your phoot is a battery on Perdika island.

For me it seems heavier than 76mm, it seems more in 102mm level. But photos can be deceiving.

I have an "100mm gun" in Aegina North. In South i also have a "175mm gun".

Not that I havent been wrong more than once in my life. I still can't walk across the water without knowing where the subsurface rocks are, but I feel at least 95 % sure that this is both a US 3 inch 50 mark II and it is located one Perdika island. See attached photos. Photo 1 is from NAVSOURCE and Photo perdika is is from Panorama via Google Earth. It shows the south east coast ofPerdika Island with the same shaped mountain with the plateau on the end.

As an aside the uniforms on the gun crew look more italian than German.

I agree Roland1369. Your photos leave no doubt about the gun and the place.
