Interesting bunker found in Norway!

#1

Post by Erik E » 21 Sep 2008, 20:32

My last trip for this year was to the Trondheim area, Ørlandet & MKB Husöen.
I was expecting a few new Regelbauten, but what we found this time was really not expected at all!

In connection with MKB Husöen, the builidinglists quote a "Fu.MG Stand m. Mannsch.Ustd 621". At first I was thinking of a plain 621 with emplacement on the roof, but the amount of concrete (850m2) didn`t make sense.... The bunker is well known to the locals at the island Husøy, but most likely not known by all the "bunkertourists" who have visited Husøy/Tarva. So... Talking to the locals who also were so kind to take us out to this small island "Hegersteinen" west ot the main island proved to be a very good idea :-)

As we approached, there was little doubt that the radar was remaining, but it was even more exicting to find this BIB bunker below it! To make it short, the Fu.MG stand proved to be a V174, the first ever found outside Denmark. The Mannsch.Ustd 621 also proved right, so what we were looking at was a combination of a V 174 & R 621!
Incredible as it might sound, we also belive that the remaining frame on top is a FuMO 4, quite possobly the only remaing in the entire world!.......Don`t think you will see this combination anywhere else ;-)

Worth mentioning is also the R 621 which was divided into two small rooms with a 80cm thick wall.
It`s looking more or less like a R 622, but the total measure of the two rooms fits the R 621 perfect!
The connection between the R 621 & V 174 was only trough a small hatch, like an emergency exit. Obviously not meant for regular use....

We almost planned to go to this island when
visiting Tarva last july, but didn;t had a boat !

Looking at this i'm sure Norway is still hiding some more

Hallo!

Nice to see you liked it as well as I did :-)
Not much parts remain inside the bunker.... I`m not able to identify this, so if anyone knows, feel free to tell what we are looking at!
PS: Just wait until SES sees this
Have to admit I sent the photos to him a few days ago as I wasn`t able to get a positive ID on the radar myself....

First photo is from the "gearbox" just under the radar itself, the two others are the only remains inside:

Hi,
Yes Erik was kind enough to share his find with me about a week ago so we could compare notes.
First of all a BIG congratulation on the find of the bunker and the remains of the FuMO 4. Both the V 174 and the FuMO 4 were rare species.

From my point of vantage the find of the remains (antenna, driving mechanism and operators handles) of the FuMO 4 slightly over shadows the V 174. This radar was only deployed at about 10 locations, most in Denmark and a few in Norway. When we identified the first in Denmark at the Skaw even F. Trenkle was unaware of the operational deployment of this system.

Attached is a picture of the remains of the display equipment racks and turning wheels at the Skaw before it was destroyed in 1988 by 1.200 kg of TNT due the presence of a depth-charge with unstable explosives.

Hi Erik,

Very nice pictures you made of these bunkers. We where as you know also in the island of Tarva in july and it is a remarkeble island. The locals told us that there was indied more on some smaller islands but it was not possible for them and us to make a trip with one of them by boot.
It must be this location on the map I assume?

For they others to get a impression about this special island you can take a look on the website http://www.bunkerpictures.nl and follow the Updates about Norway. We are still working out all the pictures we took of that beautifull Norway and its special locations.

Regards,
Raphael

Yes, thats it!
Too bad that both you & Peter were aware of the island but never reached out!
Tarva isn`t the place you choose to go on all your Norway tours I guess ;-)

Funny thing, when I was at Tarva several years ago I never took notice of this, even if it`s clearly visible from the batterysite Husöen... Guess I was blinded by the concrete

PS:
Did any of you get time to reach the Freya position?
I wasn`t made aware of this until 10 minutes before the ferry left, so I had no time to check it out.
According to our guide, there should also be "remains" there!

Erik
