The German "Beutenummer" was 24 cm K 556 (f).

According to a German document of October 31, 1944:
- no gun was in use ("Anzahl der Geräte eingesetzt = 0")
- 12 guns were available ("eins. bereit (einsatzbereich)= 12")

Hello,

I think the photograph of 240 mm modèle 1884 sur affût Saint-Chamond modèle 1916 in a "fortified position" is dated of juni 1940 and it is a french position in Alsace near the german border.
Yours sincerely,
Guy François.

Uwe,

Do you know where this batterie was located?

Yes, there are several pictures of this gun iat the same location taken by German soldiers in 1940. One text behind one of these pictures mentions "zwischen (between) Obermusbach und Linsdorf" (in Alsace).

Uwe,

I am confused by the “beutenummer” you have referenced. :? According to various sources including this one:
http://forum.axishistory.com/viewtopic. ... s#p1618559
the German designation for the 240 mm L Mle 1884/17 was 24 cm K 556(f).

558(f) corresponded to the 24 cm K(E) 558(f) which was a railway gun mounting a 240 mm Mle 1883/96M gun on a 360 deg carriage, thus, a totally different gun.

Separately, Fest.-Art.Bttr. 1358 does not appear in the Frontnachweiser of the end of 1943 nor does it appear in the Frontnachweiser of December 44. Therefore, it had a short time span!

Emmanuel, my mistake , sorry, its 556!

about Festungs-Art.Bttr. 1358 - i think it was founded in February/March 1945

equipted with 4x 24cm K. 556 (f) were too:
(so we have 3 batterie with 4 guns each and 12 guns in total)

Festungs-Stamm-Bttr. 3178 (for Magdeburg)
Festungs-Stamm-Bttr. 3179 (for Dresden)
KStN 487 v. 1.2.1945

FPN for 3179 was 44305
(25.11.1944-8.5.1945) 3.4.1945 Festungs-Artillerie-Batterie 3179.

That looks like the German 8,8cm S.K. L/30 guns that were at Zeebrügge.

I have one of this type in my collection that is missing its shield and crew seats (these were often removed in Auxiliary Raider service) :

It's an old Russian coastal mortar 9 or 11 inch on the machine Durlyahera. More precisely I can not say. Their designs are very similar, veroyainee 9 inches. After their removal from service of coastal forts were intended to land front to strengthen the artillery.
