Abwehrflammenwerfer 42

#1

Post by M19 MADMAL » 19 Apr 2009, 14:21

Hi all,

The Abwehrflammenwerfer 42 or Defencive Flamethrower Model 1942 was a commonly used weapon for covering 'dead ground' around bunkers in the Channel Islands.

I understand it was coppied from a Russian model?

Has anybody got more info on its 'history' and what it was capable of doing???

Hello, M19

This stationary weapon was a copy of the russian model FOG-1, who put from 1941 from 1945 around 15.000 pieces. The German military was so impressed by the effects of this weapon that order the production, under the name of Abwehrflammenwerfer 42, of 50.000 pieces.
This apparatus consists of fuel container, flame tube and propelent container. Necessary accessories are slow burning powder propellant, electric squibs, wire, storage battery, and fuel. It has an overall height of 2 feet 6 inches.
The fuel container is a cylindrical tank 21 inches high and 11 inches in diameter. It has iron carrying handles, and a capacity of 8 gallons. The fuel is a black viscid liquid smelling like coal tar. It is a mixture of pitch and light, medium, and heavy oils. It is a little thicker than the usual flame thrower oil. The fuel tank holds 7,7 gallons.
Performance: both electrical squibs fire simultaneously into the pressure chamber. One ignites the propellent powder which generates pressure to force the fuel out through the flame tube; the other ignites the fuel as it passes out of the nozzle. There is an ignition composition of aluminum and barium nitrate at the nozzle. The flame, 5 yards wide and 3 yards high, lasts 1 and a half secons. The range is 30 yards.

Regards,
Jose

Hi Malcolm,

With the shaky background of a few Schuldeutsch classes I'd say the top sentence seems OK and the bottom reads something like:
Befüllten Behälter nur
senkrecht, nicht liegend
abstellen

Regards,
Markus

Beautiful & thank you! :D
Translates as,
Do not carrry on the flametube only the handles.
Fill container only in the vertical, not horizontal.

Though my English and German are both quite a bit less than fluent I surmise the lower text translates more like:

Store the filled container vertically only, not horizontally.

Markus

The best english translation for this german text is this:

Do not lift by the flametube, only the handles.
Filled container is to be placed only vertical , not horizontal

By the way, what was the original colour of the flammenwerfer? On the pictures it looks black or dark green!?

Thanks C. Hoff,

I think that they were dark green as used on wooden crates and grenades etc although I have never seen one in original condition.

NOoooooooooo! :o 8O

Very nice Jos
The nearest thing found locally, which is thought to be the firing point for an Abwehrflammenwerfer 42, is the small shelf with a double wire coming out of it on the wall to the left of the 150cm searchlight seat in the attached photo.

Malcolm :milwink:
