Edit:I have seen a few pictures of the 8.8cm Flak with with recuperator covered with tables. Does anyone know the reason?

Hi Sturm78,

I am of the understanding that the recuperator is covered in wood to protect it from shrapnel damage. There were 88's on the Channel Islandas with the same wood protected recuperator.

Malcolm

Thank you very much for your answer, Malcolm.
I only have a small doubt: Was the recuperator more fragile than other parts of the cannon or the crew 8O ?

Hello Sturm78

Malcolm is right about the wooden protection of the recuperator , during bombardments pre-Day and after a lot
of Flakguns that were placed in bettungen ( only the top of the gun was above the bettung ) were lost only that
shrapnel damaged the recuperator ( oil leak ) and the gun was out of order . By placing the wooden panels over
the recuperator the guns could fire longer .

Hi Jos and all,

The photos below show various 88's on Jersey during the war. The pre D-Day photos (proberbly taken in 1942) don't have the wood protection for the recuperator but all the 88's post D-Day do.

Regards,
Malcolm

Is the 8,8 cm Flak 37 version the only version with static mount or did the Flak 18 and 36 also exist with static mounts?
