Fortified oil tanks

Post by Valtoro » 12 May 2009 13:27

For some years ago I saw some pictures on a now forgotten webpage showing the demolition of a fortified oil tank in France outside one of the old sub pens. Were there any kind of standards on those tanks?

A very obscure topic, but this hobby IS special ;-)

Hello

I have seen some of them in Gironde and Bordeaux area and also other places, and they look much the same to me :)

But if they are some sort of "Regelbau" i do not know, sorry!

Thanks for the information, anyone with pictures of those tanks?

Here is one in Kristiansand, but this one was orginally a civilan one, built in 1937, then "modified" some time between 1941-45. It's still in use!

Hello Valtoro

Here a couple of pictures i took back in 1992 wit my old polaroid

I have made a scan of the pictures, they are from Stp. Gi 328 Stp. Gironde in France - there are similar tanks in Stp. Gi329L and Gi326H.

Not quite like the one you show - but in France there are several of the type in my pictures.

I still dont know if they are some sort of standard or "regelbau" types ???

Seen some similar constructions here in Stavanger (3 of them), but if I remember correct those were only made by bricks and had no roof, so its function would be more like a shrapnell protection for a steeltank.
The only concreted one I remember seeing was up in Finnmark, but as with "everything else" up there, it was blown up during the retreat in 1944.

Added a picture from Bergen. It was quite common to protect some of the oiltanks with concrete. I have some description how to make those in som epapers from 1941/42.
If im not wr9ong Kurts pictures are from one of the KM tankanlagen. In R.Rolfs book there are some about these.
If its of interest i can post some notes from Adm.Frankreich.

?????????????????????? are you sure ??? because these tanks are at Gi 329 not 328,

Image

the tanks that there was at 328 had been built by French after the war when the old "mole d'escale" (Gi330) had been partially re used by company ESSO or ELF and are you sure that you had seen oil tanks at Gi 326 ?

Hello

To Bo2:

As it was back in 1992 my memory might fool me :) - but i have them registered as Gi328 - but it sure looks like the ones in Gi329 - so you might be right, as i am sure you are, it is your turf down there :D

I have some registered in Gi326H - but its most likely the same ones as you show here, so i will correct it to Gi329.

So no other Gi Stp. besides Gi329 with oiltanks present?

And yes - its KM - i think - right Bo2?

Stril please post notes from Adm.Frankreich - it would be quite interesting to see :)

The tanks in Bild 3 above would seem to be very similar to those installed in tunnels in St. Peter Port, Guernsey for refuelling U-Boats.

Now "La Valette German Underground Museum" (since 1988), with one tank (no.3) still in place of the original four (of possibly five or more planned).

Each tank was pre-fabricated in Bremen and assembled from sections on-site and held 30,000 imperial gallons/120 tonnes of fuel-oil. At May 1945 they contained 120,000 imp.gal. of fuel.
