Hallo.
A small contribution, only to make a comparison between "allies"
Italian WW2 "Postazione" for 2 heavy machinegun.
"Capoterra stop-line", Sardinia.
Sorry, not a war-time photo, but a well preserved italian style camouflage...
ciao

Is that still there?
That roof tiling looks very good/normal quality Italian craftsmanship - fair to assume that this was converted from a house rather than a bunker built to look like a house?
Re: Westwall bunker masked as a house
Good evening. the bunker still exists. Not a converted house, but a "new" a concrete bunker (1942), well camouflaged.
Unfortunately the new "State Road 195" (Strada Statale 195) must pass nearby and threatens to destroy two bunkers on 4 here, especially the ultra-rare "fake millstone."
In facebook, we have a lot of photos into two groups: "Sardegna Bunker Archeologia" and "Archeo.Mil".

Re: Westwall bunker masked as a house
Here is an unusual one. A bunker disguised as a house. It is not German and looks to have been captured by them.
Two German soldiers look into one of the mg portals. Note the bullet holes in the walls and the heavy iron door.
Why would there be a wire fence around it?

Thanks - do you have more details of the actual position - GPS co-ordinates or something? I have doubtless been driven past it in a car several times. I have also cycled up that road.assfort wrote:Good evening. the bunker still exists. Not a converted house, but a "new" a concrete bunker (1942), well camouflaged.

I checked out your FB pages by the way (though I don't like FB!) - respect for showing the graves of all nationalities in San Michele. I have a question about the Germans there but will PM if I can (not sure if I can - new member) as it will throw the thread off topic. - or maybe I'll start a new thread for the info/benefit of others if they are interested.

Hi Larrister,
That is a Maison Forte or Maison Fortifie.
These were built on the French borders, many of them survive (sometimes used as a house).
The lower floor is the bunker and the top is the part where the soldiers live when not in action.
Here some additional information;

My photo and a photo on the Dutch Stiwot site look very similar. Two chimneys, mg portals in exactly the same place, small window in roof etc.

Re: Westwall bunker masked as a house
Ciao, about Capoterra casemates
the strongpoint with fake house and fake millstone is on the left (road to "Poggio dei Pini" and "Pauliara")
The Superintendent of historical monuments has been advised. We hope to save this monument.

Re: Westwall bunker masked as a house
To clarify, the millstone (fake) is meant to persuade casual reconaissance that the area is just agricultural?
sorry if I sound stupid or pedantic.

Re: Westwall bunker masked as a house
some of these are really well disguised!
I didn't realise the Germans went to such lengths (some of them have basically built an actual house around the bunker!)
the best I have seen (not having seen much) in Jersey is just paint straight onto the concrete and maybe a corrugated roof.

Re: Westwall bunker masked as a house
Sorry for that DT - I realise that I maybe strayed off topic and do value this forum for its factual knowledge.
I don't have a record of the post but seem to remember that a fair chunk of it was straight and on topic.
Would it be possible to put this up so that I can maintain my thread of thought on this?
And allow me to then delete it if what remains seems to me inconsequential.
I will definitely try and seek out that millstone when next in the area.
