It could be a 15 cm K16 used by the Belgian Army and captured by the Germans.

Hi all,

I think these photos are taken before the war. Therefore it is impossible that these guns in particular were ex-Belgium guns. On the other hand, Jopaerya, these guns were designed from the beginning for motor traction in two loads, not horse-drawn (Krupp-Daimler KD I Artilleriezug-maschine). Later, the guns hidden by Germany were upgraded in the 30s with new solid rubbered wheels and shields removed.
In any case, I think that the limber wheels of carriage trailer are very strange, not standard wheels. 8O

I think that these photos were either: 1. taken during an exercise ca. 1937-1938 in East Prussia or Pomerania (due to the architecture of the houses), or 2. They may have been taken in Poland in 1939, as these buildings could be there. It is possible that at the time some of the 28 15cm K-16s that Germany still had were yet to be fitted with the wheels used on the 15cm sFH-18. I do not believe that these are the Belgian guns (they still retained their shields). As to the limber, the wheels resemble some that were used on some German prototype artillery pieces from the First World War, notably an experimental 18.5cm howitzer which never saw service. The vehicle is an early SdKfz-7 8 ton semi-track tractor (Krauss -Maffei KM-09??? of ca. 1935-1937 vintage, with the early version of the long tracked suspension).

Hi SASH155,

The old wheels of 15cm K16 were not those of 15cm sFH18. The old wheels of 15cm K16 had 6 holes (see images of Jopaerya) while the wheels of 15cm sFH18 had 8 holes smaller or 8 triangular openings (for horse drawn version).
As for the halftrack I think it is a Daimler Benz SdKfz 8 DB7 12ton.

Take a look at the post again, I was saying that these guns, for whatever reason, still had their original wheels, and had not yet been modified with the sFH-18 wheels. The tractor seemed to be a bit small to me to be the 12 tonner, but I am not home right now and can't access my books. I will concede that I am not sure. It is true that the 12 ton semi-track tractors were the usual towing vehicles for these weapons; more on this anon.

Yes, the barrel is that of the K-16. This transporter trailer has the new solid rubber tired pressed steel wheels as found on the 15cm sFH-18 field howitzer and s 10cm K-18 gun.

Hi all,

An interesting image showing some old pieces of artillery in Staatliches Museum of Berlin, in 1935:
15cm K16, 21cm Mrs16, 10cm K17 and a 25cm or 17cm MW (I am not sure).

Image from Ebay.

The Minenwerfer is the 25cm sMW nA (neues Art); they can be told from their smaller 17cm mMW cousins by their longer thicker and straighter barrels- those of the 17cm weapons were tapered from the chase to the muzzle.

Hi all,

Two other pictures of 15cm K16 (I think in the same series as the last image of Jopaerya):
The image 2 show the gun (weighing 10870kg in fire position) being manhandled by crew (soldiers should be
very strong  )

I think the pictures should be taken before the war (in Germany therefore) because the guns still have the old steel wheels. The guns were modernized in the mid 30s with new wheels with solid rubber tires.

Good evening, Sturm78!

And the soldiers have old helmets, too :) Look at the second photo...

Best regards, Aleks
