ID of radar/radio tower location near Cherbourg?
Re: ID of radar/radio tower location near Cherbourg?
I may have to reread this thread carefully once more...
I was under the impression the bunker was located west of the RN13, but this photograph seems to suggest otherwise. Unless this photograph was made looking south..... That would mean this bunker was actually north of the antenna site. But that seems to be very unlikely.
One antenna on this photograph is easy to spot, but there seems to be another (obscured by the pole) on the left of this picture. I'll still have to figure out how to explain that position. Perhaps it's simply a matter of the level of the road that makes it look like it's located on the left of the road.
So what direction is north here?

Re: ID of radar/radio tower location near Cherbourg?
Hello
I had this paper for a long but never brought it connection with the radiomasts .
This is called a Sendestelle , but what should be the purpose ( luftwaffe or kriegsmarine) ?
Regards Jos

According to the caption, however, this flickr.com picture was taken on June 18 ... 1940. The tall antenna (75 m) belonged to the French Navy and was dissassembled in 1970. So the Germans would have reused the French antenna?
Separately, the smaller pylon has three small "heads" on top. Here is a US picture from August 1944 that shows an antenna with three small "heads" as well but taller and with a simpler top. A bunkerfriend has suggested a German "dezimeter" system but that could not explain a similar feature on a pylon in June 1940 ! Another bunkerfriend has located the picture at Wn 547 on the RN 13 so not too far from Wn 548 Terres Rouges.

Jos,
Doesn't "verstärker" just mean that it is a reinforced bunker?

Re: ID of radar/radio tower location near Cherbourg?
Hi Emmanuel,
It means it is an amplifyingstation.
That does not automatically mean it is a St bunker.
But i believe i heard it was this time, it was a SK and it is demolished a couple of years ago.

This picture was most probably taken in the Summer of 1944. The vehicles are British. There was a roadblock set up on the National Road 13 at the level of the big antennas which already existed in 1940 and which belonged to a French Navy's communication center according to the caption of the flickr picture below.
Here is a picture of the roadblock. One of the tall antennas is visible:

Maybe the two site's were seperate , the site with the bunker "Verstärkerambt" and the antenna site is a naval site
"Grosssendestelle Rouge Terres" just like the Grosssendestelle at Rupenbert ( Boulogne ) according to this document .
Please note also the plans for electric wire defence for these site's .
