My best guess is that it most closely resembles the 57 mm Hotchkiss due to the barrel steps, muzzel swell and beveled sides of the breech. Incidently the picture was taken in Suda Bay Crete as the red arrow in the background points to the wreck of the british cruiser "York" .

Caveat: I have no opinion, sometimes book data is wrong. I only posted to add to the discussion and to be taken in consideration.

RE Sturm78 on 21 Mar 2013, 12:43 . I looked at and rejected the 88 mm skl 45 on M1906 carriage due to the gun and carriage not matching a photographic comparision of the two weapons. The barrel of the VP gun has 3 distinct steps with no barrel taper (ID point 1 and 2) while the 88 MM l45 has the second step tapered into the barrell with no step id point 2. The Vp gun has a carriage with a flat top over the very prominent carriage trunions while the 88 MM has very prominent rounded tops without visible trunions.(ID point 3). The VP boat gun has no visible handweels on the breech while the 88 mm has very large ones on both sided of the breech(id point 4). The VP boat gun has no operating or shaft or gear housing on the mount the 88 mm has very prominent ones on either side3.(ID point 5). Finially the breech of the 88 MM has a very distinct slope fromthe top to midpoint of the breech while the VP boat has no taper but is straight(ID point 6). I also agree With DILLI that the documentation should not be taken as proof as aside from the possibility ofan error it represents a frozen point in time and over a period of time the armament of vessles can change, what is mounted on a vessle today may not be what is there next year. I submit these reasons as an old intell SGT although I could easily be proven wrong as American Coast artillery, not german naval artillery is my field of expertice.
