10.5 cm leFH18 questions
10.5 cm leFH18 questions
Hi all,
I found this picture some time ago on Ebay. The image shows some 10.5cm leFH18 german howitzers with a rare canvas.
Have anyone any idea of its purpose? Camouflaged, protection,....
Regards Sturm78

Re: 10.5cm leFH18 questions
As a former artilleryman I can see some utility as protection during storage. These cannon (if that is actually what they are) are limbered to cassions so perhaps the person directing their installation thought them of use while moving.

Hi Strum
Could it be in use as a mortar rather than AA use? I know in WW1 shuch field to AA conversions were made but by 1939 aircraft were going too fast for this type of set up.
The British quite often dug pits for the trail of the 25 pdr gun to give it higher elevation thus increasing its use as a howitzer.
Building the turntable and digging a pit makes me think that the gun is in some sort of seige role.

Italians made that kind of setup in WW2 for 75/27. I don't know about Germans.

Re: 10.5cm leFH18 questions
Anti aircraft use is hypotheticaly possible. More likely is the gunners are anticipating fire missions in any direction, and a requirement for high angle fire. We occasionally emplaced our light 105mm (M101 & M102) howitzers the same, tho without the platform. In the Viet Nam war it was normal to emplace for a full 360 degrees traverse.
The sunburnt man in the forground, & the sparse vegitation suggests this photo was made in Africa. If so then it may be Tunisia, hence the need for high angle so as to fire onto the reverse slopes of the hills or into adjacent valleys.

I'd go for high angle fire but as for the location, my instinct tells me southern Russia\Ukraine summer of 41 or 42

Yes, IMHO the landscape also points to Eastern Front.Simon Orchard wrote:my instinct tells me southern Russia\Ukraine summer of 41 or 42

Re: 10.5cm leFH18 questions
First time around I did not pick up on the uniform or the horse type carriage. Those make Africa less likely for the location.
The high level of exposure of the cannon is odd. The several cannon crew descriptions I have from the eastern front have quite a bit about the RKKA counter battery fires from late 1942. Camoflage and gun pits were a priority for their batteries.
