Soviet heavy AA guns in german service
Re: Soviet heavy AA guns in german service
Here is a picture of a 8,8 cm Flak M39(r) (see the cut-out triangle on the right side that indicates a 85 mm M39 origin and the Zunderstellmaschine on the left for the 8,8 cm shells).

What is very interesting is the cruciform mount which is not the original mount but one of the types of Behelfslafetten like the one on the picture below (originally posted by Sam B on July 2012 in this thread: http://forum.axishistory.com/viewtopic. ... 4&start=30)

Hello All
Looking at the Zunderstelle and the oilpot on top , I think this is a rebored 8.8 cm Russian flak .

Re: Soviet heavy AA guns in german service
Jos,
We can see a blown-up piece of the muzzle brake on the left red square below. Based on the part of the platform and arm visible in the right red square, I think it is a former 85 mm M39. So, since rebored as you mentioned, it is a 8,8 cm M39(r).

Re: Soviet heavy AA guns in german service
I think it is a 8,8 cm Flak M38(r). The A-shaped gun holder and the folded grid indicate that it was originally a 85 mm M39 or a 76,2 mm M38, both on a two-axle trailer. And the attachment of the muzzle, different than on the 85 mm gun, looks the same as on the picture of the 8,8 cm Flak 38(r) below. (see my post of October 5, 2011).
Also note the letter "F" on the barrel of Jos' picture which indicates that the gun was part of a battery that had at least 6 guns.

Re: Soviet heavy AA guns in german service
Here are two pictures from an 8 mm color film (courtesy of John King) of an ex-Russian AA gun in France in 1944 (source: http://1-22infantry.org/commanders/goforthpers.htm )
The person on the pictures is George Goforth, an officer in the 22nd Infantry (4th ID). He landed on Utah Beach on June 6, fought in the Cherbourg peninsula and was wounded on July 9. He then spent 3 months hospitalized in England before returning to his unit. At that time (end of September-early October 1944), the 22nd Infantry had reached the Siegfried Line, thus, was no longer in France.
This tells me that the film had to be taken in Normandy.
On this second picture, we can see the Zünderstellmaschine 37. This indicates that the original Russian AA gun was modified to a 8,8 cm caliber. The beginning of a muzzle brake may also be visible on the first picture. However, from these two pictures I cannot tell if it is an 8,8 cm Flak M.31(r), M.38(r) or M.39(r).
