Aircraft shelters!

#1

Post by Erik E » 15 Feb 2003, 14:51

Due to the very nice weather today, I couldn`t resist bringing my camera down to the old airfield again :D

These 3 shelters are some of the remaining 11 shelters. In 1944, 18 were built, so 7 are gone for ever......

Just outside Stavanger, on the old German airfield called Forus.

The airfield was used by units from JG5

Glad you all liked them!

What is also special about this place, is that the road (ex-runway!) leading to the shelters still have it`s German name!

Erik, what kind of Aircrafts did the JG 5 have stationed in that airfield?

Hallo!

The JG5 had Bf109-G6 and G14`s in 1944. In early -45 they also had some Fw 190A`s stationed there.
The main forces was located at Sola airfield 1 Km west of Forus. By the end of the war, nearly 100 planes were found at Forus/Sola. Among them, the Ar234 now on display in USA!

The sad part of the story, is that before the British forces left Sola, they blew up everything they didn`t want to bring along....

Hallo!

As you see there are no roofs on these shelters......
The German name for them was "Splitterschützbox" which means "shrapnel protection box".
It was not meant for direct hits, but to protect the planes for shrapnel.
I guess there were too few recources at this stage of the war to build a bombproof shelter......
