Here is a picture from the website “Lexikon-der-wehrmacht”. The caption reads: “10,5-cm leichte Feldhaubitze 18/40 im Häuserkampf in Cherbourg 1944“.
However, I cannot figure out which unit would have had this type of gun during the fighting for Cherbourg in June 1944. I only know of 2 divisions that operated north of Carentan in June 1944 and that had 10,5 cm leFH18/40 in their inventory:
- 91. LLD but it lost its 10,5 cm leFH18/40 at Holdy and Brécourt Manor to US paratroopers on June 6
- 77. ID but only a handfull of its personnel retreated towards Cherbourg. The bulk of the division retreated back towards Brittany.
The house on the right makes me think more of Italy.
Any idea where Lexikon-der-Wehrmacht’s caption comes from?
