Opening in front of Fl. 242

#1

Post by Jens Andersen » 24 Mar 2010, 13:42

Hi

Can anyone in here explain the opening in the fron of the Fl. 242? - See attached photos.

The room behind it measures 140 x 66 cm.

It seems to small for observation and weapons - and it doesn't seem very useful as an embrasure as it is shaped as a funnel.

Best regards
Jens

I have only a very bad drawing of the Fl 242 , looks that it says ( .....winkel .... )

Most of the Fl 242s I know have this tiny tiny hole. Seems useless indeed..

Hi

I hoped that somebody had a official drawing with a few words on it for explanation.

So, I guess I'll have to accept that it is for shooting through, although it is so small that it can't be very useful. Also, the "embrasures" isn't anything like an ordinary, German embrasure.

Best regards

Hi Jens

Interesting discussion! I have always believed that it was mainly for observation purpose… Just visited Fanø where all the FL242 have been build on high ground, with excellent view of the local area. The opening is slightly larger than the one you posted from Hanstholm. The smallest one have almost the same dimensions as the opening of a 48P8 (9x12cm) so I guess that it could have been used as embrasure. But then again why not just install the 48P8 like in the FL243/249 if the main objective was “local defence”?

Hello
Im not sure what it is for, but observation/defence has been mentioned. Lichtsprech ? Wouldnt know.
Just to show the setup of 4 X Fl 242 at MKB Fjell. Two with the opening facing the entrance to the battery in the south, and two facing the rear in the north.
Still im thinking of observation/defence in case of use against ground targets.

Dan
Could work but I doubt that, since the opening is always facing the enemy side.

I think same thing but it's a very small hole to put "jumelles" for observation with very small angle open

Helllo
Noticed some letters on the drawings posted by BO
The letters BU remind me of a drawing i found some years ago of a small building buildt in connection with KM flabatteries in Bergen in 1943. The small building was called a BU-Nische(B.Ü ?) Only half of it was visible over ground level, and had the same sideview as teh drawing of the room in the FL242.
Perhaps that small building had a similar purpose. Have problems finding the drawing now, perhaps Jos have it ? :-)
Question is, what is a B.U-Nische. TT on same drawing from Bo ? Tischtafel ?

on mine drawing (as bad as the drawig of Jos) i can read by the hole 'SE?WINKEL ?E?'.
so it looks that the angle of the 'roof' on he funnel was important.
