Italian coast gun
Re: Italian coast gun
Not specifically against that and probably was mounted at begin of war so no threat from that kind of boats, this was the heavier of the guns types typically mounted in merchants.
Re: Italian coast gun
OK. Thanks, Dili.

Re: Italian coast gun
According to Australia War Memorial on-line, there was an Italian battery with four naval guns at Tobruk in 1941. Here are pictures of the captured guns. They look like 100/47 OTO but I’m 100% sure.

Re: Italian coast gun
I don't think it is. There were 102/35 but the tube seems too long.
100/47

It seems the 100/47 have several variants
OTO 1937

OTO 1928
http://www.culturanavale.it/documentazione.php?id=350
Doesn't seems the 149/47
http://www.navweaps.com/Weapons/WNAust_59-50_Skoda.htm
or the 149/42
http://www.navweaps.com/Weapons/WNGER_59-45_tbts.htm
The OOB for Tobruck guns are here in blue albeit for 10 June so it could have been updated: http://niehorster.orbat.com/019_italy/4 ... my_10.html
102/45? it has 2 recuperators like this one. But the other two strange things under are what?

Re: Italian coast gun
Hi Dili,
Thanks for your research. What I wanted to write was "They look like 100/47 OTO but I’m NOT 100% sure".
It's indeed very difficult to find a good picture of the 102/45 Schneider-Armstrong gun on the Web. I haven't been able to find one so far.
Since the 102/45 does not appear on the org chart you've referenced, I can see two possibilities:
1) The guns could have come from damaged warships.
2) The pictures were not actually taken near Tobruk despite the AWM captions (but it seems doubtful based on the detailed last two captions below):
- "Middle East. c. 1942. Left side view of most likely an Italian 100mm 47 OTO light calibre naval gun implaced near the coast. Note the other guns in the background also aiming out over the water."
- "TOBRUK, LIBYA. 1941-03 TO 1941-06. VX48227 DRIVER C.T. JURY, AUSTRALIAN IMPERIAL FORCE, EXAMINES ONE OF A BATTERY OF FOUR ITALIAN COASTAL GUNS CAPTURED BY ALLIED TROOPS."
- "TOBRUK, LIBYA. 1941-03 TO 1941-06. A BATTERY OF FOUR ITALIAN COASTAL GUNS BELOW WADI AUDA. THESE GUNS WERE RENDERED UNSERVICEABLE AT THE TIME OF THE CAPTURE OF TOBRUK."

Re: Italian coast gun
Nice images, Jopaerya. Thanks for sharing.
About your second one, It is the first picture I see of this gun in transport position.
According to my information this weapon could be transported in one piece (not including the platform) or in two parts.
Any additional images of this gun will be welcome.
Your first image was upload by searay member on 28 January in pag 4 of this thread.

Re: Italian coast gun
Sturm maybe one of 102/35 variants: http://www.antelmimodels.com/Foto%20Sit ... odel_3.jpg
It is dificult because this guns like the 100/47 had many production tranches along decades. So the recoil mechanisms change a lot.

Luigi, a friend from Sicily, tells me that this is the "Sole" Barracks, which is Viale Calatafimi, Palermo.
Re: Italian coast gun
assfort , any idea about the Tobruch gun?
Re: Italian coast gun
Can you provide the citation in order to request the boxes from the Archives. I hope to make it back down to College Park and would like to look into the location you were in. Thank you.searay wrote:I've been digging through the US Army photos at NARA and found a few photos of Italian coastal guns on Sicily. Here's a 152mm gun near Palermo.

Could it be the 90/42?

Re: Italian coast gun
Dili,
I don't think it is the same gun as the Tobruk gun. Many features do not match exactly: for example, on the 90/42 the two cylinders underneath the barrel move up with the gun. On the Tobruk guns, the cylinders seem to remain fixed like on the German 8,8 cm Flak. Also the cylinders on top of the barrel do not have the same shape/same end and the same attachments.
