M.K.B. Hamburg

Hello

Here are two picture's of the M.K.B. Hamburg ( Cherbourg ) after the battle .
This batterie had as main armaments 4 x 24 cm S.K.L/40 , the Alarmflakbaterie
had 6 x 7.5 cm French flak and also 7 x 2 cm Flak . The ground forces were reinforced
with extra 7.5 cm and 5 cm guns .

On the 26-06-1944 there was a Allied naval bombarment on several sites aound Cherbourg ,
the M.K.B.'s York and Hamburg returned fire, several allied ships were hit but non were sunk .

Hi Jos,
Nice pictures of "Hamburg"!
Does someone has the precise place of the Leitstand of Bttr. Hamburg?
Last time i only found one bettung, muni-stand and a "leitstand" (for the alarmbattery?).
Most of the bunkers are hard to go to, my French not very well, and thats an understatement.
And because many are on private property it's hard to explain what you want.

Found on Wikipedia a very nice piece of information on the Task Force 129 bombardment on
M.K.B. Hamburg an York ( Querqueville ) 4 x 17 cm S.K.L/40 and vice versa .

Look on the photo from Wikipedia the large bow wave on the U.S.S. Texas and the mainturrets
facing the back they were not attacking . The other blurry picture from Ebay is from the U.S.S. Quincy
and H.M.S.Glascow .

Some post-war Ebay picture's of the 24 cm S.K.L/40 guns of M.K.B. Hamburg
looks that at least one of the barrel was damaged at the end

I've never seen a damaged muzzle on any of the 24 cm guns of MKB Hamburg before. I wonder if it was actually done by the Americans (or the French) much later after the capture of the battery.

Unfortunately, there is no indication of date with any of these pictures.

Could only find this a "lucky" shot on gun 3 on 24-06-1944 with several death and wounded soldiers .

This "lucky" shot seems to have happened the next day on 24.6. If it is the shot that damaged the muzzle, I don't quite understand how it could have killed 3 people and wounded 11 since these people would have been protected by the armored shield and the gun itself. Is it possible instead that this particular shot went through the gun opening between the turret and the front wall and would have exploded inside the gun room? We've seen similar things happen before along the Atlantikwall (e.g. Azeville, Marcouf).

The more I look the photos, the more I come under the impression that it's painting instead of damage. Why is the thickness of the barrel isn't visible on the 1st pic ??

In response to post number 11 the "lucky shot" penetrated the right side of the shield of the gun, as it was only a few inches thick, and unlikely to slow down the 14 inch shells being fired at it. As to the damaged gun barrel if you look carefully there is a step at the end of the barrel not present in undamaged 240 MM guns. From this I believe that we are looking at the gun liner which has been pushed out of the barrel by attempt to sabotage the piece.
