Gun bunkers in granite

#1

Post by jopaerya » 23 Sep 2010, 10:53

Hello

At some places of the Atlantikwall there made use of granite tunnels and only small amounts of concrete
to constucted a bunker , typical examples are , Fort du Roule , Fort de Aleth , Pointe du Grouin and at Biarritz .

I am looking for these kind of bunkers that were build solitairy just like the one in the sector Mo ( Bretagne )
and Brest , does somebody know more of these typical bunkers . They could only build in sectors were solid
granite was available .

Regards Jos

Hi Jos, hi all!

you have here some photos from Ba51 Pointe Sainte-Barbe -Saint-Jean-de-Luz, France-, and here the rock is not granite (in fact it's flysch -a courious sedimentary geological formation...-), so it seems that granite was suitable but not necessary.

Regards

Alex

Hello all,

I knew this tipe of subterranean construction as "Kaverne" (Cavern), but in Alain Chazette's book :"Armements et & Ouvrages de forteresse -Mur de l'Atlantique- Volume 2" they appear named as "Stollen" (Tunnel).

In the Bayonne area (Ba) there are four Stp. of this type of building: Ba 34 -Pointe Saint Martin, Biarritz-; Ba 40 and Ba 39 -Atalaye, Biarritz-; Ba 41 -Miramar, Biarritz-; Ba 51 -Pointe Sainte Barbe, Saint Jean de Luz- and in Ba 60 -Pointe Sainte Anne, Hendaye- germans began drilling the tunnels but their construction remained unfinished.

Regards,

Alex

Hello Jos and others,

allready in 1939 there was a order given by the OKH about the replacement of concrete by rock. In this paper dated 31.05.1939 there are detailed explanations how much to reduce the outer walls of bunkers in strenght A and B. Even if this paper was ment to be used by the Festungspioniere building the Westwall it was also the basement for other regulations given later on during the war. The dimensions are in short terms:

A buildings outer walls may be reduced to 2 m and B buildings outer walls may be reduced to 1 m. This reductions may not start before a strength of rock of 1,5 m deepness. The foundation may be reduced to 30 cm.

Please find attached some other examples of bunkers build into the rock.

Regards

Daniel

Arthur,

did you investigate the bunkers on the North headland of Fécamp Harbour?

Or anyone else, know whether they are "tunnelled"?

Saw them there yesterday but only passing through: three or four above each other, possibly a couple of PakK 4.7s?

Hello Jos,

HKB La Rove is really a nice one. Did you charter a small aircraft to take this aerial shot? We entered this battery in 2005 old-fashioned by feet ;-)
