Hi Jos,

The only mine with its network of underground tunnels I know in the northwest of the Cotentin peninsula is the iron mine of Dielette, near Flamanville, which was closed in 1962. Most of the mine was actually under the sea.

Knowing that the 4./1262 at Cap de Flamanville with its 4 x 17 cm K18 had been moved to Fort des Fourches next to Cherbourg (and assuming that it had been done prior to D-Day), the Germans may have wanted to replace the 4./1262 with this 15 cm K18 battery to cover the southern edge of the Vauville Bay.

Jos,

Another interesting point: the only HKB batteries with 15 cm K18 I could find in the 7th and 15th Army's sectors were installed on the Channel Islands, thus, not too far from the northwestern coast of the Cotentin - 12./1265 HKB Blücher (Alderney)13./1265 HKB Arsenal 4 (Guernsey) and 14./1265 HKB Cobo (Guernsey).

Manu

It could be a messure to close the gap between Alderney and Cap de la Haque , because the works on M.K.B. Greville
( 38 cm S.K.C/34 in twin turrets ) were stopped in early 1944 in favor of gunbunkers for medium naval gun batteries ?
