3.7 cm exercise loader?

Post by AllAtSea » 26 Jan 2011 23:07

The Kriegsmarine definitely had an exercise loader for its 15 cm guns. It is mentioned in Whitley's German Cruisers, and I am pretty sure that the photograph on page 60 of the Schiffer Publishing English translation of Elfrath and Herzog's The Battleship Bismarck - A Documentary in Words and Pictures shows one mounted between turrets Caesar and Dora, in spite of the caption saying that what is shown is an actual gun "before being installed". My question, however, is whether such a device existed for the 3.7 cm/L83 SK C/30. As rounds for that weapon were individually hand-loaded, it seems that such a training device would be vital, yet I find no record of such a thing in English language sources. Was there such a device, or was there a system allowing the use of regular guns without actually firing? Something else I cannot think of?

Something like this maybe?
This is an excercise gun for 8.8 to 10.5.

Thank you for those pictures. Now that I know what I am seeing, it is certain that the picture in Elfrath and Herzog shows a loading exercise device very similar to this one. Unfortunately, the photo in the book is taken from the wrong side to make it clear whether the particular machine is for 10.5cm guns (fixed rounds) or 15cm (separate), so I know only a bit more than I did before.

This is the picture that started me on this search. The caption as given in Elfrath & Herzog is:
The barbette armor of the
"Berta" turret rises as high as a
house above the maindeck. Air
intake shafts have been attached
to the cylindrical wall. Between
the two heavy artillery turrets,
part of a 15-cm double pivot
mount rests before being
installed. At right of the locking
block, the elevating ring cab [sic]
be seen.
After examination of the picture and comparison of it to other pictures of Bismarck and the images posted by AvB and c_hoff82, I feel that the corrected caption should read:
The barbette armor of the
"Cäsar" turret rises as high as a
house above the maindeck. Air
intake shafts have been attached
to the cylindrical wall. Between
the two heavy artillery turrets is
the breech block of a 10.5cm
loading practice device, and
behind it turned in the opposite
direction is a 15-cm loading
practice device.
If there is anything incorrect about the foregoing, please say. Also, may I have permission to repost the pictures by AvB and c-hoff82 in the Feldgrau forum when I take my questions there?

For my pictures it's ok, just credit them (Photo: Arthur van Beveren). Thanks.
