Hi all,

Does anyone know the difference between the 30cm Nb.Wf. 42 and the 30cm Rwf.56 rocket launchers?

Here an image of a 28-32cm Nb.Wf. 41 or a 30cm Nb.Wf. 42. I can not differentiate between the two models.

Sturm, According to the Almark book "Field Rocket Equipment" what you have in your pic is a 30cm Nebelwerfer 42 and the 3 cm Raketenwerfer 56 was the the same launcher but mounted upon the carriage of the 5cm Pak 38.

Propagandagranate 41 (Propagandageschoss)
being loaded into a Propagandawerfer 41.

Well, it's written again and again about the carriage, but it is obviously not the case. 30 cm RW 56 utilizes some few elements of the 5 cm Pak 38 cariage - wheels, probably outriggers, maybe some suspension elements, but that's all. It's lower carriage is of completely different construction - it's just a fork with no traverse capability.

The wheels, trail legs (not outriggers) and parts of the suspension certainly seems enough to describe it as the carriage from the Pak 38. As for the traverse gear that would be part of the gun mounting and not the carriage in any case.

But I always thought, the basic sub-assemblies of a modern gun were: lower or bottom carriage, upper or top carriage and finally cradle with barrel.
Is the terminology with carriage and mount correct too?

Hi Grzesio

The terminology depends on which language you are speaking, Anglo-English or American-English. Both use same words for different things or different words for the same thing.

Anyhow as a gun fitter in her majesty’s REME I was taught the following. The ordnance (barrel, breach, breach ring and muzzle brake) and recoil system (buffer and recuperator) where carried in the cradle. This was able to elevate in the saddle by use the trunions. The saddle had mounted on it the elevating gear which engaged the elevating arc fitted to the cradle.

The saddle is mounted on the trail. The saddle and trail interface also had the traversing gear that enabled the barrel to be set in correct angle of azimuth. Many guns had a shield fitted to the saddle as well. The trail body had the wheels, axle assemblies, articulation assembly (split trails) and spade added to it. The combined trail, saddle and cradle (less the ordnance) made up the carriage.

The use of term mounting in British artillery normally referred to guns that were static or on a self-propelled chassis.
I believe our cousins from the new world use the term lower carriage instead of trail and upper carriage for saddle.

Here is an interesting picture of a 15 cm Panzerwerfer 42 (Zehnling) mounted on a truck instead of a half-track (Maultier or a schwerer Wehrmachtsschlepper) in late 1944 in Wissenbourg (Alsace – France). Was this installation on truck standard or an ad-hoc installation?

Photo taken by Harold Bare of the 36th Combat Engineer Regiment. The truck was also towing a 7.5 cm leIG18 on pneumatic wheels.
