75mm Mle 1897 in german service

#1

Post by Sturm78 » 17 Apr 2011, 15:08

Hi all,

I have seen the following names for the 75mm Mle 1897 guns captured by the Germans

7.5cm FK97f - I think the standard 75mm Mle 1897 french field gun (horse drawn)
7.5cm FK97p - I think the standard 75mm Mle 1897 polish field gun (horse drawn or mot.)
7.5cm FK231f - I think the standard 75mm Mle 1897 french field gun (mot.)
7.5cm FK232f - I think 75mm Mle 1897-33 used in AT role
7.5cm KM97f - I think 75mm Mle 1897 on crinoline pedestal mount

Is this correct ? :?

Apart from this, the Germans combined the barrel of this gun on other German manufactured carriages:

7.5cm Pak 97/38 - 75mm Mle 1897 barrel on 5cm Pak 38 carriage
?? :? - 75mm Mle 1897 barrel on Lafette C39 static mount. See image 1
?? :? - 75mm Mle 1897 barrel on Sockellafette static mount. See image 2

Does anyone know the German names for these two latest combinations? :? 7.5cm Flak 97f ??

Hi Sturm78,

This is what I have:

7.5 cm FK231(f) = 75 mm Mle 1897 with pneumatic tires (2 types)
7,5 cm FK232(f) = 75 mm Mle 97/33: a Mle 1897 with split carriage, designed for use in AT role.
7,5 cm KM97(f) = 75 mm Mle 1897 on Mle 1916 carriages (2 types: “crinoline” or “for firing lighting shells” i.e conical mount)

“??- 75mm Mle 1897 barrel on Lafette C39 static mount.” : on the cover page of a German munition booklet”, I’ve found the following designation:
7,5 cm Feldkanone L/36 M/97 in Radlafette für die Küste u. Bordlafette C/39. In short, it would become 7,5 cm FKM 97(f).

“??- 75mm Mle 1897 barrel on Sockellafette static mount. “: I’m not sure about this one. I’ve seen the designation 7,5 cm Flak 97(f) here http://forum.axishistory.com/viewtopic. ... 6&start=15
It looks like a German design as I haven't seen any similar French platform.

Markus,

There was some discussion about the mounting of this 75 mm Mle 1897 version known as 7,5 cm F.K.M. 97 in Lafette C.39 here :

Hi Jos,

I have this photo (rom ebay) of the same location (see the same battlements). There's a clue written in the back: "ein franz. Küstengeschütz vor St-George". Unfortunately, there are tons of "St-Georges" (it always takes a "s" in French) in France and I could find only two near the ocean: St-George-de-Didonne near Royan and St-George-d'Oleron on Oleron island. The only batteries in these respective areas armed with 75 G in 1939-40 seem to have been at Fort du Verdon (Pointe-de-Graves) and Chassiron battery on Oleron island. But I haven’t been able to pinpoint further.

Obviously, it cannot be a St-George on one of the Channel Islands (which would indeed be spelled without a “s”).

Markus,

Nothing indicates that the pictures were taken in Poland. The mounting is different from the "1915 platform" of the 75 mm Mle 97 AA gun used by the French and the Poles and seems to have been a German design.

See here for more pictures of the 7,5 cm Flak 97(f) :

Hi Emmanuel.

As I recall it, Poland was mentioned in the eBay description as the photo location however significant that may be.

Unfortunately, we can trust the location of a picture on ebay only if we can see the writing on the back or on the photo album. :?
