Hi.

The japanese army used the captured german 3,7 cm Pak with a support wheel, too.

Hi Jos,
I only saw this with the undercarriage of the 5cm Pak 38.
However i have not seen any pictures of it but maybe it is for moving the gun with horses.
Or maybe just to make the moving of the gun in to a favorable position for the crew easier.
Greetings Jack.

Good Day
Not sure how wide spread or if it was just a field modification but two pictures have the German 3.7 cm Pak with a
third wheel. ( I lean towards it being a field mod.)

Hi,

I had two pics on my HDD when it crashed without any chance to restore them

Thew wheels were very tiny and similar to the one on the last pics from Bill 13.

Thanks Bill and Tom

For your info on the 3.7 cm Pak , so we can conclude that the 7.5 cm Pak 40 did not recieve any extra wheel ??

Jos
WW2 Fact Files, Anti-Tank Weapons and Almark Weapon Series, German Anti-tank Guns 1939-1945
both state that the castor wheel was dispensed with on the 7.5cm PAK 40. Of course the caveat that
both books are old and one of the Authors is the same on both books. So newer sources may differ...

Thanks Bill for the pictures. The 3rd wheel on the 4.7 cm Pak 181(f) is interesting. It looks like it comes from a plow. But I don’t think it’s from the original French gun.

Yes, now you mention it ,it does resemble an old plow wheel. So I guess what ever makes life easier ,go for it..

Jos
Next photo is NOT definitive as the quality is poor but the PAK does SEEM to be a 7.5 cm PAK 40
(using Muzzle break as a guide). And it could possibly be a castor wheel on board.

Hi All

Since this thread was raised I have been checking my information on the 7.5 cm Pak 40. I could not find anything that suggested that it had a third wheel to help the crew move it about. I was going to post and say they were not provided with this addtional wheel, when Bill's photo has thrown a spanner in the works. 8O :)

I found this picture (from ebay.de) of a 7.5 cm Pak 40 towed by a Lorraine Schlepper. It shows the same « 3rd wheel » as in Bill’s picture including the bar on top of it. However, it could be something used for repair/overhaul since we still have not yet seen any picture of a 3rd wheel actually mounted on a 7.5 cm Pak 40.
