Ground anchors for heavy guns
Ground anchors for heavy guns
Hello
On some picture's I found , the groundplate for the 21 cm M 18 was fixed to ground anchors ,
does somebody know how many ground anchors one gun had and was it also used on the
17 cm K.18 in Mörserlafette ?
Photo's = Ebay

Re: Ground anchors for heavy guns
Hi Jos,
The 21 cm M 18 on Jersey always had 4 of these ground anchors and were arranged in a cross around the gun pivot. As the gun was permanently emplaced they were secured directly to the pivot plate and a bar (disconnected and folded back in the photo) was also deployed to aid in securing the anchor plates to the ground plate.
You can see the partly exposed recesses for them in the concrete emplacement.
I have seen one of these ground anchors (without the driving spike) which comes from a Jersey 21cm M 18 in a local collection Sorry no photo of it
The photo shows one of the guns of Batterie Mackensen (in St. Martin, Jersey) after liberation being prepared for moving across the Island to be thrown over the cliffs at Las Landes.
Regards,
Malcolm

Re: Ground anchors for heavy guns
Hi Jos
I have not found a photo of a 17 cm K 18 with the ground anchors, but now you have pointed them out I see the wires leading to them in the photos of 21cm Mrs. I have found this drawing of a 15cm s K C/28 in Morserlafette in Waffen Arnsenal S-77 Schwere Artillerie showing the wires in front of the gun.

Re: Ground anchors for heavy guns
Hi all,
The 17cm K18 gun used the same ground anchors than the 21cm Mrs 18 howitzer.
In the book "German heavy mortars" Pag.9 of Joachim Engelmann there is a image of a 17cm K18 gun using the ground anchors.
