The reason for the period of frequent sFH barrel blow ups from September 1943.

"...80% came from 15cm Gr19 with identification numbers 13 and 13a. When filling the Gr19 thin liquid explosives penetratets into roughly manufactured threading between the bottom and the walls the shell. When firing the threading is compressed and the cristalised explosives detonates. Depending on propagation the shell either explodes in the barrel or the shell is expelled and then detonates.

Since 01.06.1943 Magnesiumpaste is applied with a 10mm minimum over the shell floor prior to filling. Such shells receive a 30mm large "K" (several thousand were marked with a 40mm white "K"). 15cm Gr1 and 1a will not receive a K as these are shells with pressed filler and don't require the paste.

...

Further cases I know of but can't remember which guns it applied to was a series of very sensitive fuses and a lot of experimental ammunition that was given out because it was available (1944) and led to a large number of damaged guns.

Very interesting report. Basically, the base of the HE was screwed on.
