I am not sure if this howitzer was destroyed by accident or by enemy action

Hi all,

Another image from EBay.
According to the number of photos that can be found of german howitzers with his barrels blown up, it seems this was a fairly common circumstance. 8O :?

Does anyone know why this happened? defective ammunition??
