M.K.B.Fjell and Oerlandet close defence

#1

Post by jopaerya » 18 Aug 2012, 16:33

Hello All

The M.K.B. Fjell is wellknown and many information about the close defence is put on paper and on internet ,
also this battery has many St bunkers for close defence ( for instance 3 x 633 ) and for other purposes .

But there are AFAIK no good plans with the close defence and other bunkers of M.K.B. Oerlandet , who can
help me with this ??

Just updated the website: http://bunkersite.com/locations/norway/ ... landet.php

I think the Fjell lies more isolated compared to Ørlandet.
The terrain at Ørlandet directly around the turret is less wide stretched. Acces to the Ørland peninsula was only via one substantial road in the north near Botngård (protected by 601 with anti-tank gun and a mined rock wall, and a small unpaved road in the south. There's a 633 and 634 overlooking the peninsula in the center.

Thanks Arthur

But the amounts are different
Fjell 3 x M 19 - Oerlandet 1 x M 19
Fjel 3 x gun shelter ( 672 and 629 ) - Oerlandet 1 x 601
Fjell 2 x Pz turrets ( S.K. 6 schartenturm and 632 ) - Oerlandet 1 x 634
Fjell 4 x Fl 242 - Oerlandet 0
Fjel 2 x 638 - Oerlandet 0

Hi Jos,
Could it be that Oerlandet was not finished yet.
I have no idea when the battery was ready.

I am a little disappointed in the Norwegian input no information on the German ground defences in Oerlandet .
Perhaps their knowledge is limited as with many of us.Ill try to add som info about Fjell and Ørlandet that might help, but my knowledge is very limited. As mentioned the terrain at Ørlandet is different from Fjell. MKB Fjell was kind of isolated, with very few and bad roads. Most of the transport at the island Sotra back then was with boat. You couldnt as we do today drive from the northern end to the south. Part of it was by road, part of it by boat. The island Sotra is aprox 31X11km. Beside MKB Fjell there was a few smaller strongpoints, all beside one just having a mg position or two. Distance to the closest coastalbattery was aprox 13 km, and all the main defences at Fjell is at an area of 700X500 meters.
The setup made MKB Fjell a island within the island compared to MKB Ørlandet.
As with Ørlandet the soldiers guarding MKB Fjell came from Lw.Feld.Rgt 502, at Fjell later guarded by soldiers of the F.B 1013.

Ørlandet having in mai 43 2275 men from the Luftwaffe, in addition the men from the MKB and the HKB.
Of those where 575 flak personell, and 761 from the Luftwaffe Feld.Btl guarding Ørlandet.
At Ørlandet there was in mai 12X8.8 cm flak, 12X3,7 cm flak, 22X2 cm Flak, 3Xpak, 11Xle.werfer, 9Xsw.werfer, 16Xfl.werfer, 28 Smg., 122 Lmg., 141 mp, 1575 gewehre, 8637 handgranaten, and 2 X beutepanzer, küstenbatterie 8 gesch.(Most likely not including MKB Ørlandet) Ständige befestigungen, 21 bunkers(geplant, im bau, fertig), 158 feldmässige befestigungen(geplant, im bau, fertig), these being Inf.Stände, Mg.Stände, and Gesch.Stände.
If you add some more weapons from the HKB´s you get quite a heavily fortified area compared to Fjell. Larger area to cover, but still impressing.
regards

Well, the defence of the Fjell Battery and Örland Battery followed two different lines and cannot be measured against each other as you suggest.
The Fjell battery was a isolated complex and an independent Batterie-Stützpunkt.
The Örland Battery was located inside Festung Örland, and the defence against advancing troops started 10 km from the Battery at Botngaard/Saeter. The Fortress was defended by LW field troops (responible for Battery Örlandet) as well as Fest.Inf.Btl. 654 (responsible for forward posts and central peninsula with the Airfield as well as the Island Storfosna. Heavy AA cover was by the LW-Flak at the local Airfield.
Within the Fortress lay two Navy 28 cm coastbatteries, one Army 15 cm coastbattery and two Army 10,5 cm coastbatteries, as well as a complete mixed heavy AA-batallion. For the defence of the Airfield a platoon of initially six ex-french Hotchkiss tanks.
The Fortress Commander (i.e. the Fliegerhorst-Kommandeur) had overall opcon, exept for the coastal batteries main task in engaging sea targets, which lay under the Seekommandant Drontheim and his subordinate Artilleri-Group Commanders.

TaK JEF

Do you know if the 601 , 634 and 633 were build because of the M.K.B. Oerlandet or just for the Festung Örland ?

In the designated Battery site there are only a couple of Regelbauten, one bunker for a 4,7 cm Fest-Pak and one Mannschaftbunker. Further more there is only the Schartenstand für E-Messer (local rangefinder) and the turret with all items assosiated with it. All other bunkers are located 2 - 10 km from the battery, one M19 in fact 16 km from the Battery.
The layout of the major part of the defenses was to defend the main installations: the Air-Field and the 28 cm battery, and - as a part of this - also the two islands Storfosna and Tarva.
The building of the battery was of course one of the driving forces in getting the neccesary means alotted, but the location of the defence installations was intended to keep the enemy from getting into the Örland peninsula. The battery itself organisationally only had three 40 mm Flak and six 20 mm Flak. The close defence, including the onsite 4,7 cm Fest-Pak was manned by LW-Field units for most of the time, when the LW units was dissolved the FestInf Btl 654 took over the task.
The Festung organisation was not set up until winter 1943/44. Prior to that the peninsula was a Stützpunkt under the Horstkammandant subordinated to 702. Inf.Div.
The first layout of the defences was done in november 1942 when the II./LW-Feld.Rgt 502 arrived. The 28 cm Battery became partly operational in oct 1943, and the fire control post was manned from June 1944. In december 44 the Battery was able to fire with electrical transmitted fire control data from the command post.

I appeal to honorable colleagues for help in obtaining information on Festungs Bataillon 1013. I would be grateful for any information in particular about 2 companions Festungs Bataillon 1013.
