Captured French equipment in Normandy

#1

Post by Korbius » 15 May 2003, 19:02

I'm doing a paper for my university class, and I was wondering if someone could help me out. I'm looking for the different types of vehicles/tanks in german service that were captured from the french but used in Normandy. For example the 21st PD used the S35s if I remember correctly. Any types of tanks, numbers or units they belonged to while in Normandy would really help me a lot. Thanks anyways guys. :)

Well I will do what I can ... It is a beginning of answer and I hope it will help you ... I hope the moderator and other specialists won't be too hard with me :D

100. Panzer Abt commited to 91. ID had
1x Pz35S 739(f) (Somua S-35)
8x Pz39H 735(f) (Hotchkiss H-39)
14x Pz35R 731(f) (Renault R-35)
1x Flammenwerferpanzer Renault B2 (f) (B1-bis converted in flame tank)
1x PzIII
5x FT17 730c (FT-17c)

In the 21. PzD there were
38x Pz35S 739(f) (Somua S-35) in Pz Rgt 22
2x Pz39H 735(f) (Hotchkiss H-39) in Pz Rgt 22
24x 10,5cm leFH18/40 auf Geschützwagen 38 H (f) in Pz Art Rgt 155
12x 15cm sFH13/1 auf Geschützwagen Lorraine (f) in Pz Art Rgt 155
6x 15 cm IG auf Lorraine and 4x Reihenwerfer auf Somua in each PzGrenadier Regiments.
24x 10,5cm leFH18/40 auf Geschützwagen 38 H (f) and 16x 7,5cm Pak40 auf PzKpfw 38 H (f) in 200. Sturmgeschütz Abt

One bty of the Arty Rgt of the 716. ID is equiped with :
8cm Reihen Vielfachwerfer auf SPW Somua S303 (f) (rockets)
8cm Vielfachwerfer Mörser auf SPW Somua S307 (f) (mortar)

The Panzerjäger Abteilung of 709. ID had 9x 7,5 cm Pak 40 AT that probably were 7,5cm Pak40 (Sf) auf PW Somua S307 (f)

And there are many other units I think

Dispersed in other units in Normandy you could probably find :

PzSpäWg P178 204(f) (Panhard P178)
10,5cm leFH18 auf Geschützwagen Lorraine (f)
Renault UE-Schlepper (f)
Slf. für 28/32cm Wurfrahmen auf Infanterie-Schlepper UE (f)
Munitionsschlepper auf Basis Renault UE (f)
Munitionsschlepper auf Basis Lorraine 38L (f)
4,7cm Pak181(f) auf Geschützwagen Lorraine
7,5cm Pak40/1 auf Geschützwagen Lorraine / "Marder I"
4,7cm Pak(t) auf PzKpfw 35 R (f)
5cm Pak38 auf PzKpfw 35 R (f)
Pz39H RAK (rocket launcher) like the SdKfz251/sWR40

...

An other possible illustration for your university paper :

Image

It is a 4,7cm Pak auf PzKpfw 35 R (f) I guess.

Just hope you can read it. I was concerned about KB size. Let me know if there is any difficulty.

Regards,

Roger
