Graf Spee Leitstand/Man Made Mound?
Graf Spee Leitstand/Man Made Mound?
Here is a bit of a mystery. In 1944, a patrol from the 2nd Rangers captured the Leistand from Batterie Graf Spee near Lochrist. In 2nd Ranger and 29th Division records, this site is called the "Man Made Mound". Today while digging through 29th Division records on the Brittany campaign at NARA, I found this photo of the Man Made Mound. However, it does not appear to be the Leitstand site. It is quite large, and seems to have a tank farm under construction on the right side of the photo. There are some trenches obvious on the top of the mound, but little in the way of major fortifications. Any ideas what this might be.

This must be the material, digged from the holes for the fuel tanks.

The hill is still there and houses are built on top of it.
It was filled with Tobruks.
