75mm Gun

#1

Post by yantaylor » 08 Oct 2017, 15:50

Hi everyone.
I have just returned from a holiday in Madeira and I just happened to pass an artillery piece outside a military museum, it says on the barrel that the gun is a 75mm TR Schneider Modelo 1904.
Is this the gun used by Bulgaria and other European countries during WW1?
When I saw the letters TR, I naturally thought of Belgium, but their Canon De 75 TR was a German-Krupp weapon.

Just done some digging around and apparently the Portuguese bought 144 of these guns and seeing that Madeira is a Portuguese island then this is no surprise to find one here.
Now there is some conflicting data about this gun as some sites say that it was a 75mm PR [Puissant, système de récupération de recul à Ressort], but I have just looked at the writing on the barrel and it defiantly says TR [7 5 T.R.]

BTW; There was a Portuguese navy ship in the marina called the NRP F487 João Roby, and I took a few shots of her, but I don't think this is the place to post them.

Yanntaylor,

The gun on your picture looks to me like the 75 mm Modèle 1903 Schneider-Canet. The 75 mm Modèle 1904 Schneider was different. See here:

Hello,

It is a 75 mm TR Schneider ordered by Portugal in 1904:
-known by Schneider works as 75 PD typ.
-known by Portugal as 75 mm modelo 1903.
It is the first of the "PD" series guns: PD 2 for Spain, PD 6 and PD 6 bis for Serbia, PD 7 for Greece and many others.
Yours sincerely,
Guy François.

Great site Ralph.
I am amazed at the different types of 75mm guns produce by French companies.
