Origin of bunker at Port Festung Cherbourg

#1

Post by robin-stahlbeton » 24 Jun 2018, 08:50

Good morning,

During my last trip to Cherbourg I came across this bunker at the entrance of the Naval base. When I look at the maps of Cherbourg this one cant fit any of the strongpoints build around the port. even not the E-battery who was here. The pictures on the other hand, zoomed in, does not make it sure to me as well if it is from German or French origine. Im assuming French... On the early IGN it was already there. Can anybody help?

Rgs, Robin

Hello Jos,

I had the same impression but so diffucult to be sure on a longer distance. Is this your photo from earlier years? Hopeully our French colleagues can say anything more about this. Do the SHM documents show up with something, was it even measured?

Looks this bunker was used to defend the road to a entrance of the Arsenal Cherbourg ,
so I would go for a anti-tank gun and that why the bunker has on the left side a smaller wall ??

Hello Moonraker,

Great news, thanks!
Do you have facts that support your theory?
