Heavy guns/howitzers?

Post by B Hellqvist » 07 Jun 2019 03:00

This photo from my collection shows what appears to be some sort of artillery pieces loaded on flatbed rail cars. I've tried to identify them, but failed. Does anyone recognize them, and if so, which unit(s) was equipped with them?

Thanks in advance,
- Björn

Hello Björn, i think it shows the 21 cm Kanone 39 in travel position in separate parts.

Thanks! Feel free to use the photo for your book, if you want to.

It’s either the 21cm kanone 39 or the 24cm Haubitze 39. I’m leaning towards the latter because of the shorter barrel.

Best,

I'll look into that. Thanks for the info!

ETA: It doesn't look like the barrels have the muzzle band of the 24cm, but on the other hand, the lafette doesn't look as high as that of the 21cm. Which is more likely?

Hi there,

Do you mean muzzle break? The 24cm H39 did not have a muzzle break. Both the 21cm k39 and 24cm H39 were very similar with the only really visible differences being the shorter barrel of the 24cm h39 and certain (minor) differences in the shape of the carriage.

My 2 cents :-)

Best,
Nezar

Not a muzzle brake, but the band seen in some of the photos in this thread:

I doubt that would be discernible under the dust cover.
