Hello everyone,
I have two German maps from Delfzijl showing blocks with numbers in it. On one map they are not coloroured, but the other one is and each line of blocks is a Straßensperre, Sperriegel or a 'Feuer'. How does these blocks work? They are not always drawn on the road and are always in line with the 'Verteidigungslinien'.
Question about markings on Delfzijl maps
Re: Question about markings on Delfzijl maps
Ties, These are probably sperrfeuer.
If the enemy attacks trough one of the roads the Art.Obs. gives the name of the Sperrfeuer and the number to the Artillery.
The Artillery then gives a barrage at the named points.
Sometimes these barrages are to help the Infantry but mostly just to prevent the enemy from landing or to use a road(crossing).
There are more types of artillery barrages, one of them is harassing fire but the sort of fire that was used one your maps is predicted fire.
This means the artillery has points of fire and the coordinates of these points are already fixed before the battle, the barrage is accurate from the first grenade fired and the enemy wil be cought without time to take cover.
Another plus is that the artilley can act very fast even in night when observations can be dificult.

Re: Question about markings on Delfzijl maps
Ho Guys,
I read somewhere in a german KTB. That sperrfeuer was a sort of last defence thing.. like Jack sayd only the commander could give this order and at the command " sperrfeuer frei" (must check this) they fired everything they got at these "sperrfeuer raume"..
I imagine these were not complete streets, but more like weak points in the HKL, like gaps in panzermauern , bridges and so on.

Sperrfeuerräume. Note that fire (or enemy spotting) can be requested by light flares. So maybe the colour was pre-determined.
