Batterie Von Storch Neuwerk

Post by TiesG » 28 Feb 2021 20:58

Hello,

I have found a really nice aerial photograph of the island Neuwerk near Cuxhaven taken in april 1945. At the end of 1944/beginning 1945 the Germans started the construction of a Seezielbatterie in Schartenstände called Batterie Von Storch, equipped with 4x 15cm. S.K. C/28 and manned by the Marine Artillerie Abteilung 114. When looking at the picture it seems that 3 Schartenstande were allready finished (almost). You can also see the Leitstand. To me, the bunkers look like a type M272.

Very nice found Ties

As on the your aerial photo guns 1 , 2 and 4 received Schartenstanden ( M 272 ) and one was in a open emplacement .

Nice document! You have more regarding Neuwerk? I just bought two photoalbums of this very small island. One Luftnachrichten from 1940 and one from the Signalstelle in 1943.

Do you know where Hipper and Hossfeld? were located?

Hello Ties

I have no further information on Neuwerk , only some plans from M.O.K. Nordsee
that Hipper and later a Italian 13.5 cm batterie were planned at Neuwerk but later
the B. von Storch was placed there .
I know that B. Hossfeld was placed near Nordholz , but don't know were Hipper was located .

Regards Jos

Hello,
there is a mistake in the headline. The battery is called "Von Stosch". As many batteries in that time the name came from a famous person of the Marine. Here it was Admiral Albrecht von Stosch.

On Neuwerk you can find there some relics of the battery!

Von Hipper was located on the dyke next to Fort Kugelbake. Now there is a restaurant, but the cellarar is a relict from the battery.

You can find a lot of informations to all these batteries and a lot other places in the great book of Gerd Wildfang: "Militärische Bauten der Festung Cuxhaven ab 1870 - Teil1 & Teil2" . The 2 books have more than 1100 pages.

Thanks for your reply Oliver! I will email Gerd about this. Do you have any pictures of the remnants at Neuwerk?

Hi,
here are two pics from Neuwerk - Batterie von Stosch. You can find this concrete base (?) left from the Leitstand.

That could be a leftover of the gun bunker.
Here a M 272 for comparison. Note the part in front of the gun foundation.

A similar shape is visible at the postion of the second gun.

I think you are right Jos. When I look at Tristan his pictures it seems to be located where the most left M272 is located on the RAF photo. It was also the one that wasn't placed on the dike.

The place marked 'Leitstand': Isn't that the open emplacement of the third gun?

Also, is that a bunker right of the road junction in the far left of the aerial? The shape reminds me of a S 449. Maybe wishful thinking.

That could be a option Törsten but the S 449 is a Peilstand.
