Allied Warships sunk by Atlantic Wall Gun Batteries?
Allied Warships sunk by Atlantic Wall Gun Batteries?
Were any Allied warships ever sunk by the coastal gun batteries of the Atlantic Wall? I know there is some dispute over the sinking of USS Corry on D-Day whether by Batterie Crisbeq or a mine. Also, some transport ships were apparently sunk in the Channel by batteries on the Pas-de-Calais. But there seem to have been few if any warships (not including landing craft) sunk by coastal gun batteries.

I am not aware of any warships damaged by coastal guns batteries. The comprehensive counter battery plans to suppress the coastal batteries worked.

Bonjour,
If not only the DDay, and not sunk but simply damaged, there is the HMS Warspite on 25/08/1944 north of Brest which had to retreat quickly after firing of the battery Re303 Graf Spee.

According to report of the Seeko Kanalküste quoted by Stjernfelt in 1947 :
Sunk by Marine batteries :
3 heavy cruisers
1 light cruiser
2 light torpedo boats
1 landing craft (probably more, as MKB Longues report is missing)
1 transport ship
2 big ships
1 rocket launcher boat
Sunk by H.K.B. :
1 destroyer
1 big boat
It lacks the scope (place or dates) but it is a good basis.
regards
