Help on terms reg. artillery ammunition

Hi,
can someone point me (a) good place(s) (i.e. on the www or books), where I can find information about ammonition, the terminology and most important a good translation german <=> english? I'm looking for things like:
-Definitions of what is regarded as HEAT, AP, HE and their variants etc and what are the german counterparts.
-How is "Unterkalibergeschoß, Pfeilgranate, Hartkerngeschoß" translated?
-Difference between armourpiercing and armour penetrating if there is?
-What are the modern decendants?

Any help is welcome and appreciated, thank you in advance.

Search for books by Ian Hogg, he is the ultimate authority and expert on WWII artillery. Concurrent with his talk of guns he talks alot about the rounds they used. Find one of his books in a book store you will see what I mean.

Wish I could point you toward a web site for shot and shell questions but I can't remember which ones might have what you want, surely someone else will help there.

yes both links are helpful, thank you, but still what if I have a german expression and need an english translation? Even the Bundeswehr sticks (AFAIR) to the german terms.

thanks for the offer, I appreciate that very much. I just got some of Ian Hogg's books, and I find them really very helpful. Now I will try to put together what I have on german sources and compare it with what Hogg says. For the first this is enough for me. If additional questions should occure, I'll post them and ask for help. My aim is a small dictonary on this topic, because I find it very difficult to compare what one or the other source says if the terms are so different. I don't have so much problems with the german terms (no wonder...) but the engl. abbr. are a thrill for me.

I have the same problem the opposite way!

I have loads of German weapon related terms and abbrevations which I understand, but cannot translate into English!

Maybe we could start building a "weapon dictionary" to help others in the future? Please contact me on PM those who are interested, and we``ll see if anything comes out of this!

great idea. BTW, my problem is exactely like yours, only the people I can ask only know the english expressions, and for me as a german that is sometimes difficult to handle.
