Re: Mobile steel pilbox
The thing is also shown in this youtube video (albeit very briefly) on captured Axis equipment by the Soviets at 7.22 minutes into the video.

Re: Mobile steel pilbox
Hello,
Here is interesting photo with Panzernests on railway transport.
I wonder if Begepanther had anything to do with placing them on combat position?

Re: Mobile steel pilbox
Strange , indeed. On the one hand, structure seems to be old (visible rivets; also device seems to be used be early war troops), on the other hand presented to Hitler on May 1943 on new weapons exhibition?
Re: Mobile steel pilbox
Hello
The photo's from Peeved are troops with cavalry helmets and radio gear , looks that the
other picture's ( Hitler) are more a box model but they could be for the same purpose ??

Re: Mobile steel pilbox
Hi
Seems strange how they would bother investigating time in such a low-tech model, when as early as 1917 developpement started on these types of Kügelpanzer. When looking into the subject it seems their were several types being developped over the years ranging from 1 person to several persons, armed and non-armed, ...
Appart from one practically unused Krupp model being captured by the russians in 1945, nothing much seems to remain of these strange panzervechicles, also little is known for instance about the way it was propelled. I couldn't find any photo of it being acctual in use during WW2 although some photo's and drawings - mostly pre-WW2 - can be found.
some interessting photo's I came across;

Re: Mobile steel pilbox
The Panzernest is not a vehicle, but a stationary defence structure. The wheels are only for transportation. Panzer has two meanings in German, one is tank and the other is armour. In this case it's the latter. Not to mention the Kugelpanzer (no ü) would have probably performed terribly under real battle conditions.
Re: Mobile steel pilbox
Hi TH
You are right this would rather apply as a 'selfpropelled'-panzer rather then a mobile stationary device. A bit off-topic but it intruiged me that much I thought it would be appropriate to post it over here to perhaps find out a bit more about it's use during WW2... I also wonder how it could have been of practical and tactical use noticing it's design, slow pass, ...
