Bunker at Mauthausen

#1

Post by Steve Bond » 09 Aug 2004, 15:31

I visited Mauthausen concentration camp least week, and apart from the all the obvious terrible sites there, I am intrigued by a derelict installation in the trees at the top of the quarry, i.e. outside the camp.

There is a small bunker with two or three rooms and a partially collapsed concrete roof. Nearby is a large concrete pit, probably about 20 feet across and maybe two or three feet deep, although it is hard to be sure because it was full of leaves.

I know very little about German military installations (other than Luftwaffe), and this may be the wrong forum, but can anyone please offer suggestions as to what this installation might have been. It seemed to me to be defensive rather than anything to do with the functioning of the camp.

Thanks in advance.
