This is truely something strange.....
This cable enters the room, does a few turns up & down, and goes out again????

No idea what this could be good for......(Located in a R117)

EE

Maybe they did it to have some extra capble for spare, i've seen this also in the maginot line.
Other idea's are welcome

I can offer two possible explanations. One the extra cable was left loose as a tight cable would tend to snap when a near miss by an shell displaced it. A loose cable would be free to "ride the wave so to speak" and not snap or transfer the stress to the connectors of the equipment to which it was connected. Secondarily the extra cable would make it easier to splice a cable broken outside of the bunker. I think the first is the most likely. The American coast artillery on corregidor found that the loose cables were less likely to be broken by shellfire.

I'm still not sure what the the object in the right corner does.
It's outside air going in the Lüfter. Is there a ventilator inside because there's also an AEG switch beneath it.
It can be found in every Fl 242.

Hello Arthur

It's a Staubfilter (dust filter) on the left and then a sort of lock to close the pipe .

I've only seen them in bigger bunkers like 118, 608 or 638.
Why in this Fl 242? There's a VW filter above it?

Hello Arthur

I think there are 2 different things that look the same . The Warmwasser-Lufthitzer in the
bigger bunkers like 118, 608 or 638 and the Staubfilter only for dust . I will P.M. for the drawings .

They look quite the same but now I know the difference thanks!
Thought it was weird to aircondition this small room.

arthur, it dous not seem logical that there's also a VW filter above the HES?
the dustfilter on your picture is maybe a cheaper, easyer to produce variant than a VW?

Hi, The VW filter above the HES is for removing dust before the drawn air enters the gas filters.

The Staubfilter removes dust etc from the un-filtered air which is ducted directly into the HES from outside by bypassing the gas filters. During a gas attack the large shut-off valve to its right would be closed and the air would then be pulled through the VW filter and gas filters.

In the Channel Islands such a system is never seen :o Instead the gas filters would be removed from the HES and a bakerlite tube would replace them so the air pump would pull in air directly from outside and in-comming air would only be filtered by the VW filter.

It is said by former soldiers that the HES would be run for 20 mins every hour to keep the air fresh inside bunkers and in some cases they were run constantly to try to keep humidity down.

 Just realised that I know of 2 bunkers locally that have the large shut-off valve fitted but no connection pipe to the HES 8-)

Hi all,

A view of the upper floor of the M132 at Battery Steinbruch, Guernsey which was armed with 4 x 15cm S.K.c/28's

The M132 at Battery Lothringen on Jersey never recieved any of the range etc calculating mechanical computers and the floor of the opperations level was covered in wood planks and then carpets with every soldier entering the bunker required to remove his shoes as silence had to be maintained as all the calculations for firing the guns had to be done by the crew in their heads 8O
