38 cm. SK-C/34

Hi !

I know that the 4 turrets for the 38 cm. guns on Bismarck and Tirpitz had names ("Anton", "Berta", "Ceasar" and "Dora").

Does anybody know if the 38 cm. guns in the costal batteries also had names ?

If so, can anyone tell me the names of the 4 guns in Hanstholm, Denmark or had they similar names to Bismarck/Tirpitz ?

/Peter

Those were simply the hponetic names, but I'd suspect that battery turrets had letter or number designations as well.

Hello

The gunemplacements in a coastal battery did have designated names, but as Christian points out it was the A = Anton the first gunbattery or first pairs of guns and so forth.

In Batterie Todt and other of the big batteries in France the names was "Turm A ( Turm Anton )" and so forth. The name Anton, Berta, Ceasar and Dora was just to "rank" the place of each gun in the battery.

So it would have been likewise in Hanstholm, i think !!! But there was also other methods of naming the guns individually.

Any other opinions ????

Hello Peter

I have been reading a little bit up un the large batteries in France.

See example of drawing of Batterie Lindemann, where you can see the gunemplacements named:

Turm Anton 1 / Turm Bruno 2 / Turm Cäcar 3

There you have another combination with both name and number, other places you have only the name or the number: "Turm A" or "Turm Anton" or "Turm 1".

For instance in the Batterie Cepet near Tulon there was:

Bunker A = Concrete tunnel for tecnical installations L= 350 mtrs.
Bunker B = Tunnel for other installations
Bunker C = Bunker + Turm for two 340 mm guns
Bunker D = Central observationbunker ( Leitstand )
Bunker E = Observation and rangefinder ( Leitstand )
Bunker F = Bunker + Turm for two 340 mm guns

And apart from that a lot of other bunkers for ammunition etc. etc.

There are more information in theese books:

La Batterie Lindemann by Alain Chazette: ISBN 2-9516102-5-4

Les Batteries Cotieres en France vol. 1 by Alain Chazette

Vol 2 has arrived - but i have not received it yet - see for further information on:

http://www.histoire-fortifications.com

I am looking for informations about Hanstholm, and will come back if i find anything significant news.

Hello again Peter

It seems as the emplacements in Hanstholm was named in another way:

M. Geschütz I / M. Geschütz II / M. Geschütz III / M. Geschütz IV

M. Geschütz is most likely "Marine Geschütz" !!

See the table: Baufortschrittsplan - Stzp. 2 / M.A.A 118 ( 38 cm. )

I guess the turrets were officially named 1 - 4 Geschütz.... This is found in allmost all maps and listings for all kinds of coastalbatteries. However, the crew often gave their own names to both guns, barracks, houses+++

I wouldn`t be surprised if the crew of MKB Hanstholm had their own unofficial names aswell.......
I`ve even seen individually named 2cm guns, so I am sure someone in Hanstholm found some names for those guns aswell!!
