Bunker of the Siegfried line

#1

Post by Pettersson » 23 Mar 2005, 00:58

Hi everybody,

some days ago I discovered following thing on a Siegfried line bunker:

it is an about 50 cm square thing, built out of bricks . In the middle is an iron thing with two obstacles. I thought to discover the opening of the oven here and was astonished to find somethingelse.

Does anybody know what this could be ?

Regards,
Torsten

Looks like a closet toilet :P

MMMMmmmm...can´t say for sure what it might be.

But kinda looks like a hatch that has been cemented shut.

(probably leads to buried treasure, go dig out :D )

Hi Petterson, had gave you an answer at Schatzsucher too...

It`s the pipe to hold the SR 9 (Sehrrohr 9) for Infantry-Observation.

Hi Markus,

was it really usual to have s Sehrohr on a medical Bunker ? This bunker was no infantry one it was
for 20 wounded (10 of them could be treated after being hit by gas).

From the inner side there is only a very small hole to be seen. Thats why I thought it could be from an oven. Although an oven doers not really make sense because there was no real door to the front.

My guess would be the SR 9 too. If it were to be the intake for a chimney a closed valve would be under the opening inside the bunker. And the opening for the chimney never runs directly down through the concrete.

SR9

Hmm,
was there really a SR9 on a R32 Sanitätsbunker (medical bunker) ?

Probably there was a different use during the war. Does anybody have a foto of an SR9 and how it was looking from above and from the inside.

Torsten

I don't think they've used other closing mechanism in the Westwall compared to the Atlantikwall.
The 'stop' looks either selfmade or postwar. There can be a tube for the SR9. Doesn't mean there has to be a SR9 ;)
A lot of bunkers on the most unusual places, for a periscope, have a tube. They could use it when it was necessary.
