Hello,

Nebelwerfer means "smoke launcher" (xcuse for my bad english, but it's hard to translate from french to english).. but nebelwerfer is mainly used like a rockets launcher...so, what are the origins of this name?

I know there are a lot of post dedicated to the nebelwerfer, but I've not found answer to my question.
Many thanks for your help!

nebelwerfer was used to hide the real purpose of the weapon
the meaning "nebelwerfer" could be translated as smoke dischargers
(like the ones on modern tanks)
"nebel" or smoke to hide

the rocket launchers were sometimes called "Do-Werfer" or "Do-Geraet"
after General Domberger who supervised the development

The Do- Werfer was an invention of Dipl.Ing. Walter Dornberger. It’s also known as Do(rnberg)-Werfer,
DOV (Dornberger Vielfach –Werfer). The name Nebelwerfer got nothing to do with Dipl.Ing. Nebel. It got the name because initially it was assigned to the Nebeltruppe.
