24cm K3 Heavy Gun
Re: 24cm K3 Heavy Gun
Hi all,
Two images from Ebay of a gun with barrel blown. According to photo caption, in Russia, near Leningrad.
Does somebody konw any aditional information about the operational use of these guns during WW2 ?
According to the information on the net, this gun was use first with I./Art-Ret.84. 4 were in service when Germany invaded Poland, assigned to the first 2 batteries of I./AR 84. In the Battle of France the battalion still only had 4 guns. By Operation Barbarossa all three batteries were equipped with two guns apiece and were assigned to Army Group Centre. This situation did not change for the next two years...
Is evident that at least a gun was lost by premature explosion during 1941-42-43--- in North Front, near Leningrad...??

Hi all,
24cm Kanone 3 ammunition. Note the splined shell. It seeems that these shells required a special 8 groove barrel....
Does somebody know the German designation for this shell ?
According to Ian Hogg the standard shell was the Gr.35

Re: 24cm K3 Heavy Gun
Hello Sturm,
i think the designation is "mit Führungsrippen" (with guided rips)
i never saw it for K3, just for K5 only.

Hi Uwe,
I suppose you mean 24cm Gr.35 mit Führungsrippen, is it not ?
Here, another blurry image of these shells (from Ebay)

Hi all,
An image from Ebay. Again you can see one ot these splined shells (24cm Gr.35 mit Führungsrippen)
If we stick to the wartime photos, these projectiles seem to be the most commonly used in this gun...
Note, also, the huge size of the cartridge...
