First of all - The real and correct name for this gun is Parabellum - Not Luger or something else - The name Luger was pronbably invented in USA. Gun is European and know round europe as Parabellum - Finnish army adopted it in 1923 and in Finnish army it was know as Pitooli m/23 Parabellum. The name Parabellum was also used by germans, dutch, swiss all nations that used the gun. Name comes from latin words ci vis pacem - parabellum - If you want peace prepare for war. No matter what people in USA and also this forum say - The is no such gun as Luger P-08 - it is Parabellum P-08.

SVaaka relax, there are rarely exact absolutes in these matters. Americans commonly call Parabellum pistol as Luger pistol after Georg Luger, nothing unusual or really incorrect in that. In addition pistol m/23 is actually 7.65-mm version with four inch barrel, hence close but not exactly identical to P-08, which was 9-mm and originally had 4.7-inch barrel. Also in this case the name Parabellum actually originates from "Parabellum" being used as P.O.-box name for DWM-factory, which was the German main manufacturer of Parabellum pistols until World War 1.

It was actually based off of the Borchardt action designed by Hugo Borchardt in the 1890s, SVaaka. When Georg Luger redesigned it, it was designated as the Borchardt-Luger action. Subsequently, it was just shortened to "Luger."

Many people assume that the Luger/P08 was replaced with the P38 because it was too expensive. That actually is not the case.

The third Reich produced aproximately 929.500 P08's and 1.224.500 P38. Strangely, the P1 (basically a P38 with an alluminum frame) had a bad reputation among the german Bundeswehr-soldiers. Even though it had a good reputation internationally.

Having owned many of both, I would prefer the P38 as a service weapon.
The double action feature is a fine aspect.
The P 38 has looser tolerances than the Luger, making it much more durable and useful in actual service.
It is much less complicated and easier to maintain than the Luger.
Accuracy is not effected by that and precision accuracy is not a huge issue with handguns.
I do prefer Lugers in terms of collectible.

I love that book as much as you do.
But Mauser Oberndorf appeared to be able to produce and sell a P 38 for 31RM, presumably at the very end of the war.
