Gewehr 98 - Visierung ?

#1

Post by Hans1906 » 24 Nov 2020, 17:20

Good afternoon,

the attached very interesting photo was uploaded to the forum a few days ago in large resolution, two young RAD members with
a Gewehr 98 at a "Schiessbahn", excellent photo with lots of details, not to mention the very many viewers in the background,
in all kinds of german uniforms, and civilian clothes...

What was this little attached "visor help"? behind the so called "Klappvisier" of the Gewehr 98, attached with someting like a small
spring to the Gewehr 98? (Please look at the attached enlargement...)

A small piece of trivia - that rifle is also a G98M - as evidenced by the grooves in the stock and an updated rear sight (though not the K98b as it lacks a groove under the bolt handle and K98k-style swing swivels).

Thanks for all replies again, also for the pictures, very informative!

A german collector friend was concentrated about "everything" around the "Mauser 98" weapon system, but the
so called "Zielkontrollspiegel" was not in his collection, not back then.

Once I found an original "Zf41" in the original "Tragekasten" on a local flea market in the 1980s.
The seller, a young lady found the "Zielfernrohr" in the attic of her house, probably left behind by her grandfather there..?

The selling price back then was 5,- german Mark.

Hard to believe, but very true, she was talking about something "optical", left behind by someone in the family.

Hi folks, apologies for hijacking your post, but you obviously have a great deal of knowledge regarding the Gew 98.
I am a new member and couldn't find where to add a new post.

I have found a Gew 98 sniper, but I am not 100% certain of the scope mount.
I know there were a load of different mounting systems, but just wanted to ask your views on this or perhaps where I can get more info. I don't think it's WW1 period. I have the Senich and Ball books and can't see anything like the one on this rifle. I have found a picture (suggested in another forum) in Richard D Law's book, 'Sniper Variations of the German K98k Rifle' which shows a weimar era G98 with a mount similar to the one I have.
The rifle itself is a beauty with all matching numbers including the scope, although this has been renumbered to this rifle.
The mount has '23' stamped on the inner surfaces of both the fixed and removable sections.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Again I apologise for interupting your posts.

Tony65,
That looks VERY interesting! I don't know enough about German sniper rifles or optics, but there are several members who can answer your questions here:
www.k98kforum.com

It's the best English language forum on the planet for German small arms from 1914-1945, and probably the best in any language.

Good luck,

Good morning to the topic,

I found the attached link in the german FdW about the "Zielkontrollapparat", certainly very interesting for some fellow readers here:
